Main Idea: Learning how to reflect on major life changes with an optimistic and realistic perspective for the past and future.

Changes are inevitable, yet they always take us by surprise. We imagine that we’d simply know what to do when the time comes, and then when the life altering change happens, we’re left with the question, “what do I do now?”

Today we’re going to talk about the reality of change in our lives and how to hold realistic expectations with them. We’re going to learn when to adapt and when to hold steady. Our goal in this message is to eliminate (or at least, decrease) the stress that comes from major changes as well as the imposter syndrome.

The reason that this topic is important to talk about is because everyone feels like they are the only one who is struggling with the changes of life that come. No one should feel less about themselves while going through dramatic changes because no one else is exempt from feeling the struggle.

1. The Despair of Change

[TRANSITIONS IN LIFE ARE ALWAYS THE HARDEST]

While we are naturally resistant to change, it is one of the very few things in the world that is guaranteed to happen. In fact, some argue that the only thing consistent in the universe is change itself. Being that as it may, some changes are definitely harder than others. The most difficult ones are usually the ones that directly alter our way of life.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

2. Live In The Moment

[BALANCE IN LIFE IS NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE]

The idea of “finding balance” is nice and seems like it would work on paper but many people are left feeling more exhausted and burnt out trying to achieve it. We think there is a perfect equation of time and energy management that we can solve if we are just disciplined enough. It sounds good when you say it but it simply doesn’t work when you actually try it because “balance” is an oversimplified solution to our very complex and complicated lives. There simply is not a “one size fits all” approach to life’s problems or situations.

Matthew 16:25-26

3. Grow From The Change

[DO YOUR BEST TO LEARN FROM LIFE WITHOUT BECOMING JADED]

Certain changes can not only be hard but hurtful. It’s easy to not fully recognize the emotions or subconscious beliefs that are created after dramatic changes. These suppressed feelings and ideas become staples in our core memories that shape our defenses and behaviors in efforts to be more prepared for the next unexpected change. It often leaves us jaded and subtly bitter.

1 Corinthians 13:11-13
