Main Idea: So many people spend their whole lives wondering what their purpose in life is and feel like they never found it. While we chase things like cultural superiority, mood therapies and money, we are still left feeling empty and unfulfilled. The closer we draw to the end of each year and eventually the end of our lives, we struggle with the question of whether or not our life was meaningful.

Today we are going to talk about the unexpected gift of servanthood and how you are able to find your purpose and fulfillment in life by serving others. We are going to unpack the counter productiveness of living a selfish life. Then we are going to talk about how your purpose is found in putting others above yourself. And at the end we’re going to learn what passion looks like in a practical way when finding your calling.

The reason that this topic is so important is because so many people are aimless but hungry in regard to wanting to do something great or significant. Too many people settle for mediocrity and a mundane life because they’ve run out of ideas on how to be satisfied with their life. Tapping into this idea of servanthood can literally save your life, and it can help you to find the joy of living again.

1. [A SELFISH LIFE IS AN UNFULFILLED LIFE]

Purpose in life can be summed up in the idea of having something to live for. It doesn’t take long to realize that the satisfaction that comes from material things is always only temporary. It feels even more draining if you try to chase the comparison game. You can also truly lose yourself to over-indulged mood therapies because of how insatiable all of the things of the world are. The first step to leaving an unfulfilled life is by leaving a selfish life.

(Luke 5:1-8)

2. [PURPOSE IS FOUND IN SERVING OTHERS]

The moment that we see ourselves as servants of a greater purpose is the moment that we begin to feel and see meaning to our lives. Just like that of a mother’s realized purpose at the birth of their child, so is the person who sees themselves a servant of others. Being a “servant” of others doesn’t mean that you are some type of slave who waits hand and foot on the whims of strangers. It means that you provide a significant service or solution to a particular need.

(Luke 5:9-11; John 4:31-34)

3. [PASSION IS NOT WAITING TO BE GIVEN PERMISSION WALK IN YOUR PURPOSE]

The biggest mistake that people make once they find their purpose is their hesitancy to act because they feel like they have to ask permission. Because they feel unqualified or insecure, they wait for someone else to either do it first or to tell them what to do next. Passion is simply jumping into the waters of opportunity because you wanted to.

(John 21:4-8; Matthew 10:39)
