Bazell was born in Columbia, Maryland. He started running cross country in high school and soon developed a passion for it. He became a three-time state champion in the 3,200-meter race and won the Maryland 3A state championship in cross country.
In 2009, Bazell ran the two-mile race at the Nike Outdoor Nationals and finished fourth with a time of 8:56.00. The following year, he was selected to represent the USA at the Junior World Championships in Moncton, Canada.
