On this episode of The DEB Show, host Debra Eckerling goes full-meta with a conversation about conversations! Her guests are Matt Bailey, a marketing and communications educator, SiteLogic; Pamela Lippitt, a communication conclusions consultant, Hill Street Group; and Leisa Reid, a speaker whisperer/trainer and founder of Get Speaking Gigs Now.

The panel shares their definition of conversations, its value, and their other go-to topics. They also offer a ton of tips, along with anecdotes, on how to approach and make the most of conversations.

Conversation

  • Matt: They can take any form - family, professional, interpersonal; everything requires a conversation
  • Pam: It's a dialogue. That's where the listening come in
  • Leisa: Don't forget the conversation you have with yourself

Impact of a Conversation

  • Leisa: Connection
  • Pam: A great conversation can make your day and a bad conversation can ruin your day
  • Matt: Kindness is key for initiating conversation and the type of conversation that you have

Goals

  • Leisa: If you are upset about something, do first-degree naming. It's a conversation with yourself, but you can say it out loud or in your head. For example, you say, "steering wheel, mileage, odometer." It reminds you that all this traffic/frustration is interpretation and it brings you back to center of what are the facts.
  • Pam: Watch for signals of non-verbal communication
  • Matt: Remove obstacles to communication. Put your cellphone away
  • Bonus: Answer the question - What are your 3 go-to topics of conversation?

Final Thoughts

  • Pam: The conversation is all about your journey
  • Leisa: Have fun! Do what makes your heart sing
  • Matt: Arm yourself with questions
