The Law of Influence - Leadership Is About Influence, Not Position

“Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another.”
At its core, leadership is not defined by hierarchy or the corner office. It’s defined by the ability to inspire and mobilize others toward a shared goal. This is why true leadership can be found in unexpected places—on factory floors, in classrooms, and among ordinary people who dare to make a difference.

The Power of Influence

Consider Jesus, who is arguably the most influential leader in history. He held no political office, commanded no army, and had no material wealth. Yet His ability to connect with people, understand their needs, and inspire them to act transformed the course of human history. His influence wasn’t rooted in power but in compassion, humility, and the ability to serve others selflessly.

On the flip side, history is filled with individuals who held titles but lacked influence. Take the example of a disengaged manager in a workplace. Despite their authority, their team won’t rally behind them if they lack trust, connection, or credibility. Titles may open the door, but only influence will keep people following.

How to Build Influence as a Leader

Influence is earned, not given. Whether you’re leading a team, a family, or a community, the principles remain the same:

1. Cultivate Relationships: Influence begins with connection. People won’t follow you unless they trust you, and trust is built through genuine relationships. Be approachable, listen actively, and show empathy.

2. Lead by Example: Actions always speak louder than words. If you expect integrity, discipline, and excellence from others, embody those traits yourself.

3. Serve Others: The greatest leaders put others before themselves. As Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant” (Matthew 20:26). When you prioritize serving others, your influence grows naturally.

Real-Life Example

Let’s take the case of Nelson Mandela. Despite being imprisoned for 27 years, his influence grew because of his unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and reconciliation. When he emerged, he had the power to unite a divided nation—not because of his title as President, but because people trusted his vision and character.

Reflection for Leaders at Every Level

Are you relying on your title or your actions to lead?

How can you strengthen your influence through service, trust, and connection?

Great leaders know that influence is the currency of leadership. It’s not about demanding respect; it’s about earning it. This week, focus on growing your influence by serving and connecting with those around you.
