The Federal Med Card physical, officially known as the DOT (Department of Transportation) physical, is a mandatory medical examination for commercial drivers in the United States. This examination is required to ensure that drivers are physically fit to operate commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) safely.

During the DOT physical, a certified medical examiner assesses various aspects of the driver's health, including:

  1. Vision: Drivers must have at least 20/40 vision in each eye with or without corrective lenses, and at least 70 degrees of peripheral vision.
  2. Hearing: Drivers must be able to hear a forced whisper at a distance of at least 5 feet.
  3. Blood Pressure: Drivers must have blood pressure below 140/90 to qualify for a two-year certificate.
  4. Cardiovascular Health: The examiner evaluates the driver's heart health, looking for conditions that could impair their ability to operate a CMV safely.
  5. Overall Physical Fitness: The examiner checks for other health issues that could affect the driver's ability to perform their duties safely, such as diabetes, respiratory conditions, and neurological disorders.

If the driver meets the DOT's medical standards, they receive a Federal Med Card, which is valid for a specified period, usually two years. However, drivers with certain medical conditions may receive a shorter certification period or need to undergo more frequent examinations.

Maintaining an up-to-date Federal Med Card is essential for commercial drivers to comply with DOT regulations and continue working legally.

We offer full trucking authority packages to make the launching of your trucking company business go more smoothly. The Department of Transportation regulates safety so doing it right in the begging is very important.
