Today on Filmmaking Conversations, I speak to film producer Sarah Potter.
When the Lotus Blooms: a story of acute survival is a powerful documentary project that has been left to Naperville resident Sarah Potter after her filmmaker husband, Scott, passed away unexpectedly in July 2020. A routine endoscopy had triggered severe pancreatitis for Scott, and after months of treatments and stays in the hospital, he died from complications associated with his condition.
This project has become Sarah's salvation in a time that could have been very difficult. She had been initially hesitant to become a part of the project, yet when her husband's mentor reached out to her, she had an idea; the film was to focus on bringing awareness to Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM) and explore the parallels of finding purpose and personal loss.
Through the support of her family, friends, and community, Sarah has been able to take this project and run with it - providing her with a new passion and helping to support her two children, aged 7 and 3. Scott's compassion and dedication to the children suffering from AFM has been the film's driving force, and Sarah is sure that her late husband would be proud of her mission.
