S4:E6 “Twitter banned in Nigeria, Jack Ma's story & the Tech Regulatory framework in Africa and Asia”
Manage episode 314526108 series 3152058
A tweet from President Buhari was deleted for violating Twitter's policies. In less than 48 hours, the Nigerian government had banned Twitter, launched Crowwe (LOL), directed telcos to blacklist Twitter's APIs and instructed large companies to stop using Twitter for marketing and promotional activities.
Late 2020, Jack Ma made a comment that did not sit well with the Chinese government. At the time, Alibaba and Ant were worth $1.3 trillion, and Ant was on track to becoming the biggest IPO in the world at $34.5 billion. It was cancelled. Jack Ma then disappeared for several months and upon reappearance, has been mellow, which is a departure from the usual rock-star, attention-loving billionaire we know. Now the two companies are worth $696 billion.
On this episode we start the discussion on governmental & political interference on companies especially in Africa and Asia.
