Ep #52 Three Vital Parenting Decisions Pt 2
Manage episode 424209508 series 3515194
Welcome back to day two of the Connect Method Parenting workshop - 3 Vital Decisions! If you listened yesterday, you’ll remember we introduced the concept of stopping the negative energizing of off-track behavior. Today, we build on that foundation with the second decision: committing to using connection as your primary parenting tool.
Stop Negative Energizing: Refrain from using punishments, rewards, and ultimatums as your primary tools. Understand that these methods often fail to address the root cause of off-track behavior.
Commit to Connection: Make a conscious decision to use connection, relationship, and attachment as your primary parenting strategies. This involves showing compassion and empathy in every situation, prioritizing the relationship over external opinions, and believing in the inherent goodness of your child.
Proactive Connection: Shift from reactive to proactive connection. Show up energetically and positively, not just when things go wrong but also when everything is going smoothly.
Creating a Habit: Understand that this approach creates a habit and a culture of connection, leading to long-term positive changes in your child's behavior and your relationship with them.
We discussed how to set limits with compassion and empathy using a step-by-step approach:
- Slow Down: Pause and assess the situation without rushing into default reactions.
- See Them First: Make eye contact and ensure your child is responsive before setting any limits.
- Set the Limit: Use simple, clear language to set the limit (e.g., "I can't let you jump on the couch").
- Stay with Them: Ensure they feel supported and understood, even if you need to step away momentarily.
Today's Assignment: Engage in one-on-one connection time with your child. Let them pick the activity, and commit to spending 5-15 minutes fully engaged and present. Put away your phone and be genuinely excited about the time you spend together. This practice helps build a strong, positive connection that will serve as the foundation for your relationship.
Join us tomorrow as we continue to build on these principles and explore more ways to foster a deep, connective relationship with your child.
