In this Com d’Archi, discover ‘à la carte’ housing, a concept developed by PETITDIDIERPRIOUX Architectes (PPX) for its Philippe de Girard project, in Paris. A text written by PETITDIDIERPRIOUX Architectes and read by Esther.

Cédric Petitdidier and Vincent Prioux created PETITDIDIERPRIOUX Architects (PPX) in 2004. They won their first competition at the age of just twenty-four, on the theme "How will you live tomorrow?". Some thirty projects later, PPX has received international recognition through numerous awards, the most recent of which being the Architizer A+AWARDS, 'Best Residential Firm' 2022. The agency has developed its own expertise in the field of housing, relying on a 'convivial density' to make individual and collective housing cohabit, including high-rise buildings. Their questioning revolves around: how to live together without sacrificing the intimacy of a home? What makes a home?

For the housing project on rue Philippe de Girard, PPX proposed an innovative approach to give the inhabitants a great deal of freedom in the configuration of their homes. The floors are open-plan thanks to a central core for fluids connection and a structural facade with double-skin allowing maximum luminosity. The inhabitants could then personnalise their homes, choosing how to divide the floors according to their needs. The architect wasn’t a simple designer but an "assembler of possibilities", with more than one thousand configurations of plans drawn.
