Two New Zealand salvage companies are preparing to remove fuel and other pollutants from the HMNZS Manawanui, that is 30 metres metres under water after sinking off the coast of Samoa in October. The ship went down after hitting a reef in a Marine Reserve off the island of Upolu. 75 crew and passengers were rescued after being forced to abandon ship. Manawanui has nearly a 1000 tonnes of automotive gas oil on board, that has diesel like qualities. While the main tanks are still believed to be intact, offiicals estimate up to 200,000 litres of fuel from other parts of the ship have leaked into the sea. Navy Commodore Andrew Brown is in charge of Operation Resolution, he spoke to Lisa Owen.
