In 1975 Robert Rube was in 5th grade and moved to Oahu where his dad was stationed in the United States Army. Living in Hawaii during his adolescence, Robert developed a relationship with the ocean and his surfboard that has been a consistent influence in his life. In 2004, while on a surf trip to Costa Rica, Robert was introduced to the concept of “Pura Vida.” Directly translated as “pure life” or “simple life,” Pura Vida is better understood as way of life. A way of life that left such an impression on Robert that in 2005, he and his business partner, long time NW surfer Al Krieger, opened Pura Vida Surf Shop in the small town of Philomath Oregon. In 2016, Pura Vida Surf Shop moved costal and is now located in Otter Rock Oregon, just across the street from the stairs leading down one of Oregon’s most popular central coast breaks. Join me on episode 26, as I have the good fortune to sit down with Robert and hear the story behind the shop that exists to bring the spirit of Pura Vida to Oregon Surfing.
