Reimagining the Electric Motor w/ Paulo Guedes-Pinto of Infinitum
Manage episode 371780567 series 3289599
In this episode, Stephan sits down with Paulo Guedes-Pinto, VP of Technology at Infinitum to discuss their PCB stator and other developments e-motor technology.
By etching copper coils directly onto the PCB stator, Infinitum eliminates the heavy steel core and copper windings of conventional motors. In addition to reducing the size and weight by half, removing the iron in the magnet’s path eliminates torque ripple, cogging, stator hysteresis and eddy current losses. The result is a significant increase in efficiency across a wide range of load conditions. The PCB stator also makes it much easier to automate the manufacturing process to ensure repeatable, consistent quality.

Infinitum is setting the bar for the next generation of motors to be better for the planet – and for people. Not satisfied with being the most efficient, their goal was to design a motor that opens up sustainable design possibilities for end users by being smaller, lighter, and quieter than conventional motors. A motor that delivers more than exceptional energy savings; a motor that makes a big impact on the world with a smaller carbon footprint across its lifecycle.
With a forward-thinking design philosophy, Infinitum has reduced the size and weight of their motor, unlocking design potential for you to make any machine lighter, quieter, and more efficient.
They’re breaking new ground in design, performance, and serviceability by re-thinking every aspect of a motor’s lifecycle. This approach has resulted in a breakthrough air-core design that dramatically improves efficiency, reliability, and ease-of-use.
Paulo Guedes-Pinto, VP of Technology at Infinitum
In a career that extends for over 40 years, Paulo has near 30 years of experience in the design and manufacture of large AC and DC motors, traction motors, axial flux permanent magnet machines, high speed permanent magnet motors for subsea and land applications, as well as medium and low voltage drives. Before joining Infinitum Electric, Paulo held engineering and R&D leadership positions at TECO-Westinghouse, Boulder Wind Power, FMC Technologies, GE Canada, JDS Uniphase, and Indústrias Villares (now Gevisa, a GE company). Paulo holds 20+ patents related to electric machines and drives.
