The Yiga Choeling Monastery, commonly known as the Ghoom Monastery, is one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the Darjeeling region of West Bengal, India. It was established in 1850 by Lama Sherab Gyatso and belongs to the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is situated at Ghoom, which is about 8 kilometers from Darjeeling town and is known for its serene surroundings and spiritual ambiance.
It was an amazing experience getting up there (and going to the bathroom in an outhouse on the side of a cliff was quite the adventure)!
One of the main attractions of the Ghoom Monastery is the statue of Maitreya Buddha, also known as the Future Buddha. The statue is about 15 feet tall and is adorned with traditional Tibetan paintings and sculptures. Visitors often find the monastery's architecture and the panoramic views of the surrounding hills captivating.
