Eucharistic Revival Conference #3: The Importance of the Eucharistic Prayer Last week we began looking at the Mass and the prayers of the Mass through the centuries. Ultimately the journey will take us through examining the Mass in the Past, the Present and Potentially the Future. We started the journey by examining the prayer of the consecration or the Eucharistic prayer. It may also be called the Prayer of Consecration. We examined the New Testament text of the Institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. The Last Supper captures the essence of what Jesus did: He took the bread, gave thanks, broke it, and shared it with his disciples. This moment is recounted in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, as well as in St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. Today we look at several topics including a more detail look at the Eucharistic prayer through the centuries and how Roman Canon impacts the Mass.
