In today's youth-led service, we explored the theme of authenticity in our Christian walk, especially in the context of a world dominated by social media. We began by acknowledging the unchanging and unfailing nature of God, contrasting it with the fallibility of humans and the transient nature of societal trends. Reflecting on my own youth, I noted how much has changed over the years, from language to technology, and how these changes have influenced our lives, particularly through social media.
Social media, while a powerful tool for connection and outreach, has also created a culture of comparison and superficiality. We often present only the best parts of our lives online, leading to a distorted sense of reality and self-worth. This comparison game can steal our joy and distract us from our true identity and purpose in Christ. The app "Be Real" was highlighted as an example of the desire for authenticity, yet even it falls short as users still curate their posts.
The core of the message emphasized the importance of being genuine in our faith. Just as a counterfeit bill can look real but lacks the identifying marks of authenticity, so too can our outward appearances and actions be deceiving if not rooted in true spiritual fruit. We examined Matthew 7:15-23, which warns against false prophets and emphasizes that we will be known by our fruits. True Christianity is not about outward appearances but about the inward transformation and the fruits of the Spirit.
We must be cautious of the counterfeit and ensure that our lives reflect the genuine love and holiness of Christ. This involves more than just attending church or looking the part; it requires a deep, personal relationship with God and living out His teachings daily. Authenticity means being willing to stand up for our beliefs, even when it is unpopular, and being transparent about our struggles and imperfections.
In conclusion, we are called to examine ourselves and ensure that our lives bear the true marks of a follower of Christ. We must strive to be real Christians, not just in appearance but in our hearts and actions, allowing the fruit of the Spirit to shine through us.
