×On this episode, Nadine shares her abortion story: the time she left her abusive boyfriend, moved to a new city, and found out she was pregnant. If you want to read Nadine's story, here is the written version she published in 2021: https://medium.com/@nabedros/this-is-my-story-1d6ae6139d9f
Abortion Actually is a multinational collaboration working to demystify the abortion process by making and sharing images and audio of abortion as it is, actually. We believe that the new frontier in abortion stigma is the abortion process itself. For many of us, the first time we learn what an Abortion Actually entails is when we are confronted with the decision of whether or not to end a pregnancy. Conversations around abortion rarely focus on the practical aspects of doing an abortion. We want to demystify the process, by bringing these stories to the forefront. Self-reported pain, pads, friends by the couch, blood, emotions (good and bad), comfort foods, hot water bottles and work the next day help us understand what an abortion is. We can normalize abortion by creating narratives that reflect the realities of doing abortion. We are looking for submissions of video and audio recordings of peoples abortions. If you're interested, please email us via AbortionActually.org You can also find us on Instagram, TikTok, and Youtube @AbortionActually Abortion Actually is a collaboration between Abortion Support South Africa, Women on Web, Shout Your Abortion and Abortion, with love and is funded by inroads.…

After sending emails to each other for almost two years, Karen and I record our first IRL (online) conversation. On this episode, Karen talks about how she became an abortion activist and the work that she does to fight abortion stigma. Karen had two abortions as a teenager, and because of all the stigma she experienced and shame she felt she kept her abortions a secret for more than twenty years. Finally being able to tell her husband and children about her abortion ignited a commitment to fight for a world where nobody has to live in shame and secrecy because of their abortions. In this episode she talks about all of this and so much more. Karen Thurston (she/her) lives on occupied Kumeyaay land (California, USA) and is an independent advocate dedicated to ending the stigma of abortions. She is the creator of the on-line stigma-fighting projects 2+ Abortions Worldwide and Love Abortion Providers. She also volunteers on the All-Options Talk Line and with OARS, the on-line abortion resources squad. Her advocacy to end stigma and increase access has included sharing her abortion story in many venues, testifying before federal and state lawmakers, clinic escorting at Feminist Women’s Health Center in Atlanta, and volunteering with the abortion fund Access Reproductive Care-Southeast. On this episode, I talk to Monste Olmos about her work as a birth worker, and the ways that she uses herbs and other ancestral practices to support people's reproductive experiences. We talk about abortion being an ancestral practice, something that has happened all throughout history, before western medicine and the advent of abortion pills. Montse shares her experiences around pregnancy and abortion, and we talk about what it means to share our stories and knowledge publicly. Montse Olmos (she/her) was born in Mexico City and grew up in the states of Nuevo León and Tamaulipas. She comes from a mixed lineage and identifies as Totonaca-Nahuatl. Trained by Ancient Song Doula Services, she is a Full-Spectrum Birth Companion (with a focus on fertility, abortion, postpartum and everyting in between) for QTBIPOC folx. Montse is passionate about addressing racism within the birth community and globally. She created the first-of-its-kind online course titled, Cultural Appropriation in Rebozo Work, which addresses the decolonial history of this sacred textile and connects it to anti-racism education. Montse is also an international speaker on Indigenous sovereignty and autonomy as well as issues such as extractivism and the commodification of Indigenous knowledge and traditions. She has presented her work at the National Midwifery Institute, The Educated Birth and the SIAParto Conference in Brazil, to name a few. Currently, Montse is an abortion educator at DOPO, a UK-based organization dedicated to providing abortion support and educational resources to all gender birthing people. In addition, she provides mentorship to other Doulas at Manhattan Birth. When she’s not investing her time in birth work, Montse cultivates corn, beans, squash and medicinal herbs. She also performs traditional music with her band, Grupo Tepeyolohtli, is a traditional danzante, and homeschools her two daughters. Young people face specific barriers to accessing abortion services, and we need to be providing abortion services that are tailored to the specific needs of young people. So how do we provide abortion services and abortion support to young people in a way that recognises the diversity of young people's experiences? On today’s episode Carly and I talk about providing abortion services to young people, and how we can do better in being adult companions and supporting young people in their abortion experiences. We talk about adultcentrism in abortion work, how abortion movement work and services are often led by and tailored to adults and as a result, we risk infantilising young people and assuming certain things about their reproductive lives and decision making capacity based on their age. Carly Manes (she/her) is a white, queer, Jewish full-spectrum doula from New York. She has always believed that young people deserve transparency when it comes to information about their sexual health and bodies. Carly has been a practicing abortion doula for over six years, supporting more than 2,000 individuals during their in-clinic procedures. She loves the beach, chicken tenders, and her communities. She lives with her partner Mo and their playful pitbull Mickey. Links: "What's An Abortion, Anyway" Book by Carly Manes & Emulsify Episode 17 of Abortion, with Love: "What's An Abortion, Anyway?"
