We live in a soundbite world where things are often taken out of context, or worse, twisted into meaning something the original authors never meant. The ramifications for this are often devastating. Unfortunately, many of us are guilty of approaching Scripture the same way, taking verses out of context or twisting them to fit our worldview or bias. While there are certainly those that do this intentionally, many Christians have simply never been taught how to accurately "handle the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15).
In Part 2 of Keeping Scripture in Context, Pastors Ryan and Jared provide an overview of how the Bible is structured and layout a system for studying the Bible that will help you keep Scripture in context--and discover the theological principle for your life today.
OLD TESTAMENT OVERVIEW:

  1. Pentateuch / Torah (Gen - Deuteronomy)
  2. Historical Books (Joshua - Esther)
  3. Psalms
  4. Wisdom Books (Job, Proverbs - Song of Songs)
  5. Prophets, Major & Minor (Isaiah - Malachi)

NEW TESTAMENT OVERVIEW:

  1. Four Gospels (Matthew - John)
  2. Book of Acts
  3. Paul's Letters (Romans - Philemon)
  4. General Letters (Hebrews - Jude)
  5. Revelation

INTERPRETATIVE JOURNEY ("Journey Into God's Word" - Duvall & Hays):

  1. Grasping the Text in Their Town -- What did the text mean to the Biblical audience?
  2. Measure the Width of the River to Cross -- What are the differences between the Biblical audience and us today?
  3. Crossing the Principlizing Bridge -- What is the theological principle in this text?
  4. Grasping the Text in Our Town -- How should individual Christians today apply the theological principle in their life?

Try it out! Select a passage of Scripture and use the Interpretative Journey to guide your study. Then, send us an email to podcast@afreshwind.org and let us know what you're learning.
