I’ve become more and more convinced that most of sin, our toxic, dysfunctional, non loving behavior arises from fear and feelings of inadequacy about ourselves.
Why did Jacob exploit his brother’s weakness to take his birthright? Why did Jacob steal his brother’s blessing? Why did he work so hard to get the better of his father-in-law?
On this last point, we first see the situation through Jacob’s eyes. We later learn his father-in-law’s perspective: ‘You fool, you’re married to my daughters, These are my grandchildren. I wanted you to have all this.’
The blessing that Jacob struggled for and eventually received was this: He came to understand that he was an overcomer, that he was going to be ok, that he had been loved and blessed by God.
When we understand that about ourselves, everything changes.
