Whether it is their history or architecture that captivates you, or whether you’ve encountered them in person or on pages, you would be hard-pressed to find someone who is not intrigued by castles. And someone who is particularly interested in these magnificent structures is Ali Norton. Ali is a PhD student studying at the University of Exeter’s Centre for Medieval Studies. Her thesis explores castles through the lens of local history, using GIS analysis to examine the relationships between castles and landscapes, lordly identities, and settlement nucleation in the East Midlands.
