There is a major question in the black community about whether or not physical punishment is a viable option for disciplining children. The practice has been around since slavery and is so ingrained into black parents, that it isn't viewed as something that is problematic but rather a necessary component to parenting. In her Book Beating Black Kids, author Asadah Kirkland, discusses why black parents have got to change their thinking about this tradition and gives effective alternatives for parents who may be uninformed about how to be effective at parenting in a way that doesn't involve corporal punishment.
