×As far as I am aware, this is the sole recorded output of a duo who were prevalent on the Folk/Poetry scene in Sheffield in the 90's. This album dates from '91 and I know I saw them prior to that. They are Stuart Arfield (Guitar) and Rob Smith (Spoken Word). Most of the sentiments expressed here were sarcastic comments on the way the world was progressing (?) Unfortunately for us, the world seems intent on imitating Bob's astute observations. Stuart's guitar can be heard around Yorkshire with Big City Blues.…

An excellent track from an up-and-coming writer, Tim Woods. This story relates to people who spend so much time in diversionary hobbies that their own life very rapidly becomes an unsatisfactory past. Tim says that this story was inspired by one of my own and for those few kind words, I am very grateful…
Had good customer service and quality during the pandemic? I have. And here's another one to listen to. These people do not disappoint (in my experience!) Treat yourself and your loved ones.
I think you will like the light-hearted message behind this story from my friend 'Juke-Box Tom'.
Here’s a reworking of my favourite track, Almost Home, from my favourite Sheffield musician, Andy Whitehouse, and fellow musician Matt Howden. This is a track I use frequently to front my podcasts and it has resonance with me on all sorts of levels. You might remember Andy from two of my previous podcasts. If you don’t, go and look for the links in our podcast library. You’ll find a full interview in Kelham Island Discs playlist and a major contribution from Andy to ‘A Stent In Time’. https://andywhitehouse.bandcamp.com/track/almost-home-2 andywhitehouse0@gmail.com…

Okay so this isn't Radio One and I'm not really a DJ. But... here are a few original tracks from people I have interviewed over the last couple of years and one or two others thrown in. The mood is variable, as I say I'm no DJ, but I hope enjoyable. Get your stompin' boots on for some of them too!
Recorded entirely in Room 324 by kind permission of the Holiday Inn overlooking Brentford Lock in London, Jorge Ramirez displays vividly why his music and good humour helps to fill restaurants and pubs wherever he plays. Jorge is a long-time friend who I don't see enough of. He also attempted to improve my guitar playing...Hmmmm...…

Arthur Thickett passed away some time in 2011. Perhaps he'd had enough of our capacity to make war not love. Arthur's is a moving life story of a remarkable man. Here, his loves, hopes and desires are wrestled with on a daily basis. Here also are the things he hated, mostly war and hypocrisy. A more-than intelligent child of his time, struggling to overcome humble beginnings, Arthur chimes for us all. Arthur's books are available at queensparkbooks.org.uk.…

This time the Urban Tiger is in conversation with Stewart Lodge, a comedy practitioner who defies convention and genre. There is a thin line between comedy weird and comedy genius and I think Stewart stands astride that line in a way that I respect and admire. Especially when he performs 'Little Johnny Cash'. See if you can categorise his talent, I can't...…

Hi. This is an in-depth interview with Richard Hennessy, Proprietor and founder of Focused Hypnosis in Sheffield (Website here: https://sheffield-hypnosis.co.uk/). Richard shares his experience, knowledge and enthusiasm for this branch of alternative therapy and explains why it is rapidly gaining popularity due to its undeniable track record as a force for good and as a readily accessible vehicle for life-change on a personal level.…
Hi, this is Bill doing his bit for the community. The community in question is Burngreave, an ethnically diverse area right in the Heart of our Fair City of Sheffield. Burngreave Messenger are the local community newsletter who seek to add podcasting to their repertoire. Never being one to refuse an opportunity to spout in public, I agreed to help my good friend Angela Robson by taking down some techie equipment and talking their hind legs off for an hour. This podcast contains many of the voices, opinions and sense of purpose within this vibrant and committed group.…
Hi. Side two of 'Turn the Page' by New Jersey Turnpike, a real blast from 1976! Enjoy again...
Hi. This is side one of the 'Turn the Page' album produced by New Jersey Turnpike in 1976. I bring you this as an echo from my past, along with that of many others, because we are all coming of an age now where these bands and songs are in danger of being forgotten. Never thought of myself as an 'Endangered Species' before. I wonder if the Tiger or the Mountain Gorilla ever share that thought... Enjoy again... and again... and again...…
Hi. Red Stripe Candy is my contribution to the Watch & Wait anthology. I have to say that of all the stories I have ever written, this one, certainly, if not the best, I consider to be in the top 3. It is a light fantasy along the theme perhaps that when you have just made yourself comfortable, someone always comes along and tips you out of the chair. No, perhaps the story is deeper than that. I hope you find it so anyway. Thanks for being here, Bill Allerton…
Hi. Danuta Reah is a multi-award winning crime writer. Much of her work is set in South Yorkshire so just like the rest of us here, it stands for no nonsense!
This track is 'Cheval'. 'Cheval' is the old french word for 'Horse'. Used today it describes a tall, slender mirror that stands free on four feet. Sometimes those feet can be very ornately carved, like the proud horses in the story. The story is about how we begin as a child with an open mind to the magic in our imagination, then as we grow older and have more responsibility we begin to lose touch with it. But don't worry, as we get older still our imagination finds ways to reconnect us with the magic. I hope you enjoy this one Bill Allerton…

This is the second track from the Watch & Wait anthology we published on behalf of raising funds for Lymphoma Action, as they now like to be called, and is a tale of people struggling to cope with their own human frailty in adverse situations, overcoming their fears and finding that in courage, there is a great freedom.…
Hi. I'd like to introduce you to a superb new writer, Stephen Mellor. Stephen's prose is strong, muscular and his narrative is compelling in the extreme. VISIT Eleonora here> https://www.eleonoramignoli.com/ Eleonora Mignoli is an Italian writer based in Sheffield. I came across her work at the 2018 Novel Slam supported by the University of Sheffield. The standard was very high again this year and Eleonora was a worthy participant, beating most of the stiff competition with her new novel, 'Oneirika'. Set in Japan, Oneirika is the name of a game where Players compete in the land of their dreams. Eleonora is also multi-faceted, as you will hear while she tells her own story to The Urban Tiger.…

"The China Bird is a delicate novel. Not over-emotional, it hovers like an insistent moth around the edges of your consciousness, quietly insisting that you turn just one more page. Spot-on characterisation ensures you will have a view on each of the protagonists, a view that will change as the book moves back and forth, but one which will always have you wanting to know what will become of their hopes and dreams and disasters." Go on... spoil someone you love with your excellent book choice.. Cheers, Bill Allerton…

NHS Humour Resources Dept. And now the REAL reviews: "...the writing is so original and the dialogue so inventive and funny it cracks me up. It's brilliant, clever and lyrical. You have one hell of a talent..." (Clem Cairns, Originator of the International Fish Prize for Literature.) "...We're told we're in an amorphous corner of an imagined Ireland, but we're never far at all from the likes of Flann O'Brien, Joyce, Milligan, etc.. Julius McEarly fancies Ruby, but he's having to wait… and then there's Anarchy, Freedom, Love and Immortality in the air… and there are buses and coffins… and more intellectual business than you can shake a shillelagh at… The laugh-aloud gag to me was about the kid called Cnut, but there are sly jokes everywhere - the paint stains… all the academic stuff… the chapter titles… the pawned watch. This book is sexy, and kind, and playful. It gave me weird dreams; it is a weird dream..." Okay, so this isn't an adult story... or is it? Over on Urban Tiger Radio 2, 'Childrens Hour' (@user-68415326) I have started to serialise the original Kenneth Grahame text of Wind in The Willows. This the last one I shall post on here because I think you have come to expect something a little more 'hard-edged', but if you have any children between 3 and 15 years of age then treat them to a listen here then steer them over to 'Childrens Hour' on iTunes or Stitcher.com for many more hours of safe, enjoyable listening. Cheers, Bill Allerton…

I find it strange that we only ever got to hear our side of 'The War of The Worlds', and probably that of any other war too. 'To the Victor the Spoils' they say. And the Victor also gets to write the history. Have we ever discovered what really starts a war? I don't mean some overstuffed Grand Duke who gets himself shot by being overstuffed and in the wrong place at the wrong time, but I mean the REAL impetus behind it. Can their aims be more desperate than we at first realise? Take a listen to what the Martians have to say about it. Were they maligned by the Wells brothers... H.G. & Orson? Or was it an unintended consquence, as per my third and a half law of motion... Read on...…
This is Side 1 of Bill & Martin Head to Head at The Harlequin, long thought lost (by me anyway) and now restored to it's full ad hoc glory due to an advance in noise reduction technology. This is a short story that centres around the way that a sudden loss can bring about obsession, mainly as a replacement therapy for what is now missing from your life. Obsessions creep up on us slowly until they become all too obvious to everyone. Some obsessions, like Honesty, or a desire for the Truth to come out, can be harmful to those around you in those moments when your socialising senses have been nullified by grief. Other obsessions are more physical, and may have a far deeper meaning, like cleanliness...…
This time around we have Don Oliver & Bryan Ducker. I have known these two singers for around 28 years, listening to them in various pubs and folk clubs around Sheffield and I thought it was time to dig a little deeper and find out who they are and from what background they came. What a surprise I got! Turns out we are almost related! Have a good laugh and a good listen to Don & Bryan. Many thanks as always to Andy Whitehouse for the loan of his track, Almost Home, for our intro/outro.…
Hi. This is a demo disc I found lurking in a forgotten corner where it has languished for twenty years. I met the singer/lead guitarist Paul Bellamy in 1998 at an art class. Well, we should all try something we're crap at. In my case I have an unlimited choice... These tracks are not for the faint-hearted so I left them at full volume for you to enjoy. Get out the air guitar and stomp to KING DICE (NOT the American band, who must have stolen the name. Can't trust anybody. Leave a name lying around for twenty years and someone will take it... I don't know what the world is coming to.) Bill…
I have had the misfortune to be present at the point of death of people close to me, and those experiences left me with an unanswerable question. How to explain the moments of lucidity that can appear prior to the loss of all bodily function, sometimes taking the form of one-sided conversations with loved ones who have passed previously. I have no answer for this, but having seen it in action I have tried to come up with an explanation that I can live with. This story is about just that scenario. Blame is a ravenous creature. It feeds on ‘what if’, not on ‘what is’. And eventually on you.…
It's not what it says, It's what it implies, came into my possession in 1999. This is a compilation of 30 different poets, all basing their work around the ethic of the title. It came to me because I, like the other 29 poets, volunteered a track for the album. I know most of the other poets, but by no means all of them. These are people you may never hear again anywhere else, so I bring them to you because of that... because everyone has a voice... and because that voice needs to be heard, if only for what it implies.…

This is a conversation with Paul Middleton who fronts what must be my favourite live band of all time, the Angst Band. It must be, I'm a Yorkshireman, and even I pay for a night out in Harrogate several times a year to go and have my ears blasted in The Blues Bar, a unique venue on Montpellier Parade (near Betty's) that has, apart from a strange but welcoming taste in decoration, wall to wall music, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. If you ever wondered what it feels like to be in the middle of a band while they are on stage then get yourself over here... and if you do, stay at The Crown Hotel. It's downhill all the way from The Blues Bar.…
I hope you've all been enjoying Berlie's wonderful story of self-discovery. This is the last podcast from that novel and I'm sure that you will all now go to Berlie's incredible website: www.berliedoherty.com/ where you can contact Berlie herself and tell her how much you enjoyed her story. Bryony Doran is at her best in this ethereal, exotic and ultimately convincing tale of a future that most people think will never happen. But if you look closely at the horizon, you may just see... This, the title story from Bryony's collection, 'The Sand Eggs', is a tale of dispossessed women, in which our near future echoes like a warning bell.…
I was privileged to be asked to attend an interview in the Abbeydale Picture House, Abbeydale Rd., Sheffield, by Katharine L. Butchers, a student at Sheffield University studying the social aspects of life in the 50's and 60's particularly, although the history of this building stretches back to 1920 when it was built as a Variety Theatre. The Cinema is a colossus of a building that straddles the top of a small hill, dominating the entire surrounding area with it's outer shell of white stone. Lit up outside at night, as it remains in my memory, complete with a wrought iron, glazed shelter under which to stand while queueing in the rain for the next must-see Hollywood Blockbuster, this cinema was a magnet for all at the south side of town.…

Hi. This week's conversation is with Steve Salfield, the inimitable Saxophonist and Jazz Musician. Like many musicians, Steve doesn't limit himself to one band but plays different genres with different, but always excellent, people. During this conversation you will hear from 'Back Seat Jivers', the Rock 'n Roll band that Steve plays with, along with tracks from 'Jet Collective', a band that I feel is almost orchestral in its size, composition and the way it plays jazz-based 'new' music. Topping us off is a track blended from the album 'G.P.S.', which follows a more standard, albeit improvised, take on Jazz. There are even rumours of another incarnation as 'Salfied/Chandler'. In fact, our intro and outro are taken from that very band's CD, 'Free Thought'. Enjoy Steve's Journey through Life, here on Urban Tiger Radio! Playing with Steve in various guises are : Reg & Karen Clegg, Pat Sprakes, Paul Biggin, Wendy Kirkland, Simon Becket, Clive Loveday, Graham Jones, Phil Naylor, Clive Marshall Harvey and Sara Littlefield…
PUNCH & JUDY SHOW AXED OVER FEARS IT TRIVIALISES DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. So said the Burgers of Barry Island, South Wales in 2016. The Punch and Judy Fellowship equated the decision to 'banning wine gums because there are alcoholics in the world' This is an 'End of an Era' poem. The Punch & Judy show, once a staple of every British holiday beach, and sometimes there were more than one if it was a large resort, has now almost gone. Thankfully there are stalwarts and traditionalists who keep this form of Theatre (for that is what it is) alive. It survives still despite the death knell that Sir Freddie Laker sounded for it with his cheap airline tickets to European beaches where the sun could almost be guaranteed to shine, unlike our own Fair Isle. Very quickly, good weather became the expected norm and dear old Britain could never live up to that. So... along with the decline of the seafront entertainments into 'push-penny arcades' and the shops into tat and Charity shops, came the decline of the beach-side entertainment, and poor old Mr Punchinello, curiously of Italian lineage, Judy, the Policeman, their Dog, and a whole string of sausages and bad jokes, have been retired to a memory and the occasional historic re-enactment.…
Here is Chapter 6 of Berlie's wonderful 'coming of age' novel. Enjoy! More to come!
How much of Life and Death do we actually experience? Or are we just... 'Browsing'?
Hello again. I promise you some more interviews and music over the next few weeks, but have to admit that life and the weather have played havoc with my schedule this winter! Having said that, what I have for you today is what I think is one of my best stories. This is '7'. A story of shifting loyalties and prejudices and ultimately... revenge? Make up your own mind on that.…
May Day is a 'Bank Holiday' in most of the UK. It probably originated as a Roman festival for the beginning of summer but the name of it has become synonymous with the International Call Sign for Help. It derives from 'Maid'ez', the French for 'Help Me'. This track came from a workshop with my good friend Berlie Doherty. Have a listen to her 'Granny was a Buffer Girl' serialised right here on Urban Tiger Radio. We were to explore the beautiful Derbyshire countryside beside her cottage and then compile a story around what we found. This is my effort...…
Hello again, this weeks addition is a story about erections, loss, fading love, dead dogs, squeaking gates, envy, and Japanese Brake Parts. Before that puts you off, I’d mention that this is the story that got me into the winners anthology of the Fish Prize, an honour I don’t think I’ve ever bettered.…
Here it is! Chapter 5 of Berlie's incredible tale of growing up. Enjoy! More chapters to come each week so set your reminder! Look out for a reissue of this novel coming soon to all good bookshops and online suppliers. I'll let you know when it's out.
Hi, this is a short sci-fi story if you like that sort of thing! If not, we have plenty of other offerings on Urban Tiger Radio for your pleasure. I think sci-fi begins with an open mind and explores the things that seem inconceivable now yet have their roots somewhere in our past, in instincts, particularly survival. As a species we have adapted and survived more changes over the millennia than we can ever consider. Most of those changes were gradual, and a fitting subject for archaeologists, but what if a dramatic change in our habitat forced a dramatic change in us as a species. Listen on...…
Hi. This is chapter 4 of Granny was a Buffer Girl b y the famous author, Berlie Doherty. More to come! Enjoy the story so far... Bill.
Hi. This is a fantasy short story. I don't know where the inspiration came from, but I need you to imagine you find yourself inside of a dance hall frozen in time by a curse. The story is about on whose head a curse lies, and it's also about a deep and enduring love and how the men of successive generations of the same family deal with the responsibility for that love. I hope you enjoy! Bill.…
Hello again, and welcome to Side 2 of the spectacular display of talent that was Heeley Writers back in the late 80's and nineties. This mix has it all, poetry, humour, political incorrectness, short stories, inexplicable poetry (in some cases)and even a couple of things performed very naively by myself, Bill Allerton. Chapter 3 of 'Granny was a Buffer Girl' by Berlie Doherty
Chapter 2: Granny was a Buffer Girl by Berlie Doherty
One of my favourite authors, Berlie Doherty, has given me permission to publish her novel for early teens, 'Granny was a Buffer Girl', as an audiobook using material I have rescued from a previous tape recording. This is Chapter 1 to be followed by the rest shortly. This book is about to be re-released in paperback and I'll let you know when that happens. I am releasing it here because I think it has great appeal for adults too, as a piece of social history beside the fact that it is beautifully written by my favourite award-winning author. There is also a short explanation of what a 'Buffer Girl' is, or was. Enjoy!…
This is the one interview that I have been waiting for... As you will hear, Roy has been a friend of mine for many a year and we have always supported one another in the poetry/writing circles in Sheffield. I am glad that I finally managed to pin him down long enough to record him. If the volume is a little variable on this track it's because I'm using previously recorded material, some of it at a live venue. Don't let that spoil Roy's telling of his colourful history.…

If you had the ability to return to visit yourself in early youth, what would you do with that? Would you advise them in a way that would change your life irrevocably? But if you did, what about the 'Law of Unintended Consequence'? Who would you end up being as a result? Would you even like what you would become? Far better instead to go back there and steal a precious gift, a gift of unfettered vision...…

Welcome to Heeley Writers R.I.P. This was an organisation that myself and many friends enjoyed the support of some twenty odd years ago. (Very odd years!) It was for a long time a member group of The Federation of Worker Writers and Community Publishers. A left-wing gobfull of a title if ever there was one! However, it too was a worthwhile effort until someone made off with the funds! This is side one of 'Pieces of Eight', a tape of poems and stories recorded by the group in 1991.…
Time to get out your foot-stomping boots! Listen here to the epic journey of 'Treebeard', the band that refuses to die, in our conversation with Chris McMahon, Founder, Anchor, and Architect of Reinvention. Sarah Purchon is an aspirational writer. Based in Sheffield UK, Sarah manages to juggle a husband, a retired greyhound and an 8 month old child (but not necessarily in that order!). Sarah is about to complete a novel for teenage readers with the title of 'Phoenix'. The main protagonist is Lily Phoenix, a girl about to discover just how amazing she truly is. Teenagers will find this book inspirational and find that Sarah is sharply in tune with all their fears, hopes and aspirations for the future.…

Every now and then we find a reason to pop our cork... This is mine... Don't misunderstand me, I love my City. And so do Roy Blackman, Paul Middleton, Mo Andrews and the others that appear in this podcast. What I don't personally love is the continual stream of ideologically dogmatic idiocy from those who, for whatever reason, (lack of hope, imagination?), we unerringly put in charge of it. Look at the strong right arm in the picture alongside this podcast. Where is it today? Where is it's sense of purpose and pride? Is our Future now in the Past? Or can we make our Past the Future? One can only hope...…
Hi. This short podcast is dedicated to the memory of Rhoda Swindells, the wife of Howard Swindells, the subject of our Kelham Island Discs number 3. I met Rhoda several times at The Gardeners Rest and various other events but most notably in the kitchen of the house where I interviewed Howard. Rhoda was obviously seriously ill at that time and Howard displayed such care and affection with her that it was impossible not to be moved. A very few days after the interview they moved home to Scotland where Rhoda was very quickly hospitalised and subsequently passed away. So, as mark of respect, I give you a reprise of Howard's special song for Rhoda: My Old Lady & Me.…
Hi. Twenty years ago today... no, not Sgt. Pepper, me... I ran a Writers Workshop at The Point, Doncaster Arts Centre. Writers attended from the whole of Yorkshire and Humberside, 40 of them at one time at some of the events. This compilation is the result of a sound recording workshop we ran one weekend. The tracks were recorded and polished by none other than John Robinson of Geordiegit fame. Enjoy the variety, Bill…

Hi. This is an introduction to 'Children's Hour' by Urban Tiger Radio. This is a separate stream so if the content of this short intro appeals to those of you who have children of almost any age, search for 'Childrens Hour' on iTunes, Stitcher or Google or wherever you receive your podcasts and let them have a listen. There is a serialised tale on there called 'Sir Tingly & The Quest for The Dargon. Excellent bedtime listening for small ones... Enjoy!…
Hi. This is a brief introduction to the people who made 'Networx' at the Doncaster Arts Centre the great success that it was.
This episode of Kelham Island Discs features Howard Swindells, self-penned musician and lyricist whose alter ego is the driver of a Mobile Library in the north of Scotland. Howard writes about the people he meets and those who are most important in his life, as in 'My Old Lady & Me', written as a Valentine present to his wife. Howard is a mountain runner and trains every day while not out intimidating other motorists on Scotland's famous single track highland roads.…
I hope this poem shows vividly that there's more to a teapot than a lid and a spout. Bomber's Moon is set during the Sheffield Blitz of the 12th. and 15th. of December 1940. Much of the City Centre and the residential areas were destroyed by raids from the Luftwaffe. There is a ground-gaining theory that in their attempt to destroy Sheffield's capacity to provide high quality steel for the war effort, they found their Radio Beacon location system distorted by the British War Department technicians and were fooled into thinking that they were bombing the East End factories. No-one told the Civilian population. In total over 660 people were killed, 1,500 injured and 40,000 made homeless in two nights of bombing.…
Ever wonder where we came from? Or where we are going to? Whalesong tells us that the thoughts we believe are our own are actually a shared legacy and if instead of just listening we tried to understand, we might all get there together. Put on your headphones, close your eyes, and walk out onto a night beach lit only by a wish for the stars...…
Hi again, another composite podcast from Urban Tiger. This time up we have Paul Middleton and his Angst Band, a blast from the past from 'Poke' and one from even further back from me
No. 2, An interview with the fabulous Andy Whitehouse, is a welcome addition to my 'Kelham Island Discs' podcasts. For those who don't know, Kelham Island was once at the industrial Heart of Sheffield. The steel production and casting took place down the East End where Hitler failed to bomb them, preferring our town centre instead. I don't know why he did that, the pubs weren't that bad... But the Kelham Island area was the Heart of the engineering section, where the raw steel was actually made into something useful that we could throw back at Hitler! Nowadays, the factories are becoming up-market apartments for overpaid hamsters and students with well-off parents, but having said that, the pubs around there are certainly springing back to life. Not least 'The Gardeners Rest' on Neepsend Lane... of which I own a share! Go and buy beer! Make me rich!…
Well, here’s me playing catch-up with Welsh Geoff among other things and including ‘My Camera’ and ‘Lafayette’s Dog’, two tracks from a recently re-discovered 1997 CD (Life Blood) by ‘The Buffalo Brothers’, Allan Wilkinson and John Crisp, two lovely lads from Doncaster who soundly beat me in a songwriting competition back in around 1996. You won’t hear their tracks anywhere else but here now. I’m reliably informed that they don’t play these days. That’s a real shame… but if anyone knows where they are… urbantigerradio@gmail.com would love to hear from you.…
A darkly comedic, very tongue in cheek fantasy about Connie Williams, Musician Extraordinaire, Legend in his Own Lunchtime with the least faithful wife a man could wish for. In search of some muse to bolster his own ego, Connie finds something that will strip away all of ours... Inspired by a picture of a church organ bearing a vast array of 'Stops' with names that sounded like a Wagnerian Fantasy, I tried to fit as many into the story as I could. In the end, I achieved something like linguistic contortionism... and had to give up.…
This is the first of my 'Kelham Island Discs' series where I interview local musicians, poets and writers who specialise in performing their own works. Today's podcast is an interview with Welsh Geoff, a well known and greatly enjoyed performer on the Sheffield Folk Scene. His songs are often quirky, but uniquely Welsh (as you might expect) and if you want to hear more or buy a CD please contact Geoff directly on www.welshgeoff.co.uk Listen & Enjoy…
This... is a culinary tour through the Heart, Hopes, Dreams and Wishes of a lonely middle-aged Chef. Is it this time? Does she by now have the right ingredients?
This is a recording of a fascinating blend of original music and poetry that Martin & I held at The Harlequin on Johnson St., Sheffield shortly before the demise of the pub itself. I don't think we were responsible for that, but who knows? Listen... and make your own mind up.
Hi again. This is a composite podcast composed of a brief travelogue and quirky guide to Gdansk in Poland, a short story by the title of Obtuse and a song from Roy Blackman. These elements all have a connection, see if you can spot what it is... I call the picture 'The Face of Wonder'. It is another of those lovely pictures you never set out to take...…
This weeks Podcast is a sensitive Short Story titled ‘A Twist of Glass’, from my collection, Firelight on Dark Water… Tales of the Warm and Wonderful. I didn’t think too much about this story after I had written it. In fact, it hid amongst the dross on my computer for years before I took it out and read it again. Then it made me cry. (No, it’s not that bad, I’m just a soppy old sod.) It’s a story about all the daftness that surrounds young love… the myths that we grow up with from the playground about how it will be and all our dreams of finding that perfect someone and how they will fill our lives to capacity and love will thrum our hearts like the strings on a double bass. All true. And it all happens. But none of it is as good as the anticipation of seeing that one truly undeniable sign that this is the one… that this person is the culmination of your teenage hopes and dreams… or as devastating as the worry that you are not going to be strong enough to deal with it. Thomas needn’t have worried. What he’d found that day in the Post Office was nothing short of perfection… and she would be strong enough for both of them……
‘Tick Tock, said The Penguin’ represents a moment of great sadness… not mine, but that of others, and yet despite that I could not fail to be touched in a way that has stayed with me all my life. Strangely, what touched me was not a presence, but a hollowness, an absence, a place waiting to be filled between two young and brightly expectant lives, two people who lived up to their moment in time in a happily moving, unashamed manner. But Life is a wheel. And wheels turn….…
Hi. This weeks Podcast includes three highly entertaining songs and poems from Roy Blackman, Rotherham's own Man of Memory. Roy can remember the dates, times, teams members and score of any Cup Final you choose to name, among many other things, but has been known to forget where he last put down his sandwich... Those who know him love him dearly. I hope this short compilation demonstrates why.…
With his work recorded by the likes of Tony Christie and Richard Hawley, Martin Bragger unaccountably remains one of the world's best as yet undiscovered singer/songwriters. His lyrics are pure poetry, straight from the heart of everyone. His touch is so light yet so deep you begin to think that these are YOUR songs, not his...…
During World War One, young men of all classes were encouraged to join up to the Armed Forces by various means. One such was the 'Recruiting Sergeant' who bought them beer and regaled them with great tales of valour. Another was the shaming force of peer pressure, the intimation that anyone who didn't sign up was ultimately a coward. Have we learned better since? I leave that to you...…
Hi. This weeks Podcast is 'Fishing', where I query a perennial problem related to those who persist in 'worm-drowning' or 'water-thrashing' as a hobby.... Just who is catching who...?
Included in 'The Train' CD, this is a short memoir of the week my life changed forever, not necessarily for better. Pivotal moments in your life aren't always your fault, they just seem like it when you are young. However they occur, it's the way you embrace them that counts...
I read somewhere a long time ago that Poetry and Science Fiction are almost mutually exclusive. I never believed it, although I will subscribe that the difference between Poetry and Futuristic Fiction may well be that one describes emotions that predate us, and in which we can all share historically, and that the other pre-empts us with as-yet-unrealised situations for which we may have little or no emotional experience or reserve on which to draw. That said, there had to be a way. So I left it on the backburner for a while until one evening I ended up in a discussion with poets about the different forms that poetic language could (or should) conform to. Although I consider myself to be a non-conformist, I am certainly of the opinion that all real Poetry should have scansion, preferably a rhyming scheme of sorts, and preferably not a really dogmatic and obvious one, and all else beside that is Prose in one form or another. It became clear to me during the debate that this linguistic Origami that the ‘poets’ were espousing, may not be the only thing that Poetry was capable of folding. What about Time and Space? Why the Haiku not? How dangerous can it be?…
How old is too old to ride a motorbike? And are the best riders always who you think they are... or even who THEY think they are...
