A Simple Christmas Luke 2:1-3 ESV In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. [2] This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. [3] And all went to be registered, each to his own town. Luke 2:4-5 ESV And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, [5] to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. Luke 2:6-7 ESV And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. [7] And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. Luke 2:8-10 ESV And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. [9] And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. [10] And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Luke 2:11-14 ESV For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. [12] And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." [13] And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, [14] "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!" Luke 2:15-16 ESV When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." [16] And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. Luke 2:17-20 ESV And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. [18] And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. [19] But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. [20] And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

×GALATIANS…THE GOSPEL OF GRACE…GIVES US FREEDOM THROUGH FAITH…TO BRING GLORY TO GOD! GOD CANNOT FAIL IN PERFECTLY KEEPING HIS PROMISE…AND MAN CANNOT SUCCEED IN PERFECTLY KEEPING GOD’S LAW…GOD’S PLAN HAS ALWAYS BEEN FOR SALVATION TO COME BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH GOD CANNOT FAIL IN PERFECTLY KEEPING HIS PROMISE Galatians 3:15-18 ESV To give a human example, brothers: even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified. [16] Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, "And to offsprings," referring to many, but referring to one, "And to your offspring," who is Christ. [17] This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void. [18] For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God gave it to Abraham by a promise. A TEMPORARY LAW CANNOT NEGATE A PERMANENT COVENANT…GOD CANNOT FAIL IN PERFECTLY KEEPING HIS PROMISE MAN CANNOT SUCCEED IN PERFECTLY KEEPING GOD’S LAW Galatians 3:19-22 ESV Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. [20] Now an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one. [21] Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. [22] But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. THE LAW SHOWS SINNERS THEIR GUILT…GRACE SHOWS THEM THE FORGIVENESS THEY CAN HAVE IN CHRIST…

GALATIANS…THE GOSPEL OF GRACE…GIVES US FREEDOM THROUGH FAITH…TO BRING GLORY TO GOD! ABRAHAM WAS SAVED BY FAITH AND SO ARE WE Galatians 3:6-9 ESV just as Abraham "believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness"? [7] Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. [8] And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "In you shall all the nations be blessed." [9] So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO BE SAVED BY THE LAW…AND IS NOT PERFECT Galatians 3:10-12 ESV For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them." [11] Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for "The righteous shall live by faith." [12] But the law is not of faith, rather "The one who does them shall live by them." CHRIST WAS PERFECT SO HE COULD REDEEM US FROM THE CURSE OF THE LAW…MAKE US A PART OF GOD’S PROMISE TO ABRAHAM…AND GIVE US THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Galatians 3:13-14 ESV Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us-for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree"- [14] so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. DO YOU WANT TO BE FREE FROM THE CURSE OF THE LAW? COME TO CHRIST! DO YOU WANT THE BLESSING OF ABRAHAM? COME TO CHRIST! DO YOU WANT THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT? THEN COME TO CHRIST!…

Sermon Notes: GALATIANS…THE GOSPEL OF GRACE…WHICH GIVES US FREEDOM THROUGH FAITH…TO BRING GLORY TO GOD! QUIT STRADDLING THE IMAGINARY FENCE…THERE IS NO FENCE! Galatians 5:16-26 NLT So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves. [17] The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. [18] But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses. [19] When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, [20] idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, [21] envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. [22] But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! [24] Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. [25] Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit's leading in every part of our lives. [26] Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another. GET YOUR EYES BACK ON JESUS…AND OFF OF YOU…AND WHAT YOU THINK YOU CAN DO Galatians 3:1-7 AMPC O you poor and silly and thoughtless and unreflecting and senseless Galatians! Who has fascinated or bewitched or cast a spell over you, unto whom-right before your very eyes-Jesus Christ (the Messiah) was openly and graphically set forth and portrayed as crucified? [2] Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the [Holy] Spirit as the result of obeying the Law and doing its works, or was it by hearing [the message of the Gospel] and believing [it]? [Was it from observing a law of rituals or from a message of faith?] [3] Are you so foolish and so senseless and so silly? Having begun [your new life spiritually] with the [Holy] Spirit, are you now reaching perfection [by dependence] on the flesh? [4] Have you suffered so many things and experienced so much all for nothing (to no purpose)-if it really is to no purpose and in vain? [5] Then does He Who supplies you with His marvelous [Holy] Spirit and works powerfully and miraculously among you do so on [the grounds of your doing] what the Law demands, or because of your believing in and adhering to and trusting in and relying on the message that you heard? [6] Thus Abraham believed in and adhered to and trusted in and relied on God, and it was reckoned and placed to his account and credited as righteousness (as conformity to the divine will in purpose, thought, and action). [7] Know and understand that it is [really] the people [who live] by faith who are [the true] sons of Abraham. QUIT STRADDLING THE IMAGINARY FENCE…THERE IS NO FENCE! GET YOUR EYES BACK ON JESUS…AND OFF OF YOU…AND WHAT YOU THINK YOU CAN DO THE GOSPEL OF GRACE…GIVES US FREEDOM THROUGH FAITH…TO BRING GLORY TO GOD!…

GALATIANS…THE GOSPEL OF GRACE…WHICH GIVES US FREEDOM THROUGH FAITH…TO BRING GLORY TO GOD! Galatians 1:10-24 ‘Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant. Dear brothers and sisters, I want you to understand that the gospel message I preach is not based on mere human reasoning. I received my message from no human source, and no one taught me. Instead, I received it by direct revelation from Jesus Christ. You know what I was like when I followed the Jewish religion—how I violently persecuted God’s church. I did my best to destroy it. I was far ahead of my fellow Jews in my zeal for the traditions of my ancestors. But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his marvelous grace. Then it pleased him to reveal his Son to me so that I would proclaim the Good News about Jesus to the Gentiles. When this happened, I did not rush out to consult with any human being. Nor did I go up to Jerusalem to consult with those who were apostles before I was. Instead, I went away into Arabia, and later I returned to the city of Damascus. Then three years later I went to Jerusalem to get to know Peter, and I stayed with him for fifteen days. The only other apostle I met at that time was James, the Lord’s brother. I declare before God that what I am writing to you is not a lie. After that visit I went north into the provinces of Syria and Cilicia. And still the churches in Christ that are in Judea didn’t know me personally. All they knew was that people were saying, “The one who used to persecute us is now preaching the very faith he tried to destroy!” And they praised God because of me.' GALATIANS…THE GOSPEL OF GRACE…WHICH GIVES US FREEDOM THROUGH FAITH…TO BRING GLORY TO GOD! DITCH CHRIST AND TRUST YOURSELF AGAIN??? Galatians 1:6-7 ESV I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel- [7] not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. DITCH THE PEOPLE TEACHING YOU THAT BLASPHEMY AND ASK GOD TO CURSE THEM SO NO ONE ELSE CAN BE MISLED Galatians 1:8-9 ESV But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. [9] As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. GALATIANS…THE GOSPEL OF GRACE…WHICH GIVES US FREEDOM THROUGH FAITH…TO BRING GLORY TO GOD! THE MESSENGER: FILLED WITH GOD’S SPIRIT Galatians 1:1-2 ESV Paul, an apostle-not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead- [2] and all the brothers who are with me, To the churches of Galatia: Acts 9:1-19 ESV But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest [2] and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. [3] Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. [4] And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?" [5] And he said, "Who are you, Lord?" And he said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. [6] But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do." [7] The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. [8] Saul rose from the ground, and although his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. [9] And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank. [10] Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias." And he said, "Here I am, Lord." [11] And the Lord said to him, "Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, [12] and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight." [13] But Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem. [14] And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name." [15] But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. [16] For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name." [17] So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." [18] And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized; [19] and taking food, he was strengthened. For some days he was with the disciples at Damascus. THE MESSAGE: RIGHT WITH GOD’S WORD Galatians 1:3-4 ESV Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, [4] who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, THE MOTIVATION: TO BRING GLORY TO GOD Galatians 1:5 ESV to whom be the glory forever and ever. THE CHRIST OF CHRISTMAS ONE DAY THE GOVERNMENT WILL BE PERFECT Isaiah 9:1-5 ESV But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. [2] The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. [3] You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. [4] For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. [5] For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. BECAUSE THE ONE GOVERNING IT WILL BE PERFECT Isaiah 9:6 ESV For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. AND HIS PERFECTION WILL LAST FOREVER Isaiah 9:7 ESV Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. A PERFECT GOVERNMENT! RUN BY A PERFECT RULER! THAT WILL LAST FOREVER...WILL YOU BE A PART OF IT?…

THE CHRIST OF CHRISTMAS JESUS EMPTIED HIMSELF OF HIS SOVEREIGNTY Philippians 2:5-7a ESV Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, [6] who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, [7] but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. JESUS BECAME A SLAVE…IN TOTAL SUBMISSION TO HIS FATHER Philippians 2:7b ESV but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. JESUS BECAME A MAN BUT NEVER LOST HIS DIETY Philippians 2:7c ESV but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. JESUS HUMBLED HIMSELF TO DO SOMETHING FOR US THAT WE COULDN’T DO FOR OURSELVES Philippians 2:8 ESV And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. JESUS BECAME THE EXALTED LORD OF GLORY Philippians 2:9-11 ESV Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, [10] so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, [11] and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. IF YOU BELONG TO JESUS… EMPTY YOURSELF OF ANY SOVEREIGNTY THAT YOU THINK YOU MIGHT HAVE… AND BECOME A SLAVE…IN TOTAL SUBMISSION TO GOD, OUR HEAVENLY FATHER… IF YOU DON’T BELONG TO JESUS…RECOGNIZE THAT ON THE CROSS, JESUS DID SOMETHING FOR YOU THAT YOU COULDN’T DO FOR YOURSELF… AND RECOGNIZE JESUS AS YOUR SAVIOR AND LORD…BEFORE YOU HAVE TO RECOGNIZE HIM ONLY AS LORD. THIS IS THE CHRIST OF CHRISTMAS!…

REVIVAL THROUGH ROMANS…STRENGTH IS FOR SERVICE, NOT FOR STATUS STRENGTH IS FOR SERVICE, NOT FOR STATUS Romans 15:1-2 ESV We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. [2] Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. CHRIST, AS OUR EXAMPLE, TOOK ON THE TROUBLES OF THE TROUBLED Romans 15:3 ESV For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me." SCRIPTURE, WRITTEN A LONG TIME AGO, WAS WRITTEN TO ENCOURAGE US TODAY…SO WE CAN BE LIKE CHRIST Romans 15:4 ESV For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. WE’RE GOING TO NEED A LOT OF GOD’S HELP TO LIVE IN HARMONY…AND BE LIKE CHRIST Romans 15:5 ESV May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, BUT…WHEN WE GET ALONG WITH OTHERS, AS WELL AS JESUS GETS ALONG WITH US, GOD WILL GET THE GLORY! Romans 15:6-7 ESV that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. [7] Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. STRENGTH FROM GOD IS FOR SERVICE, NOT FOR STATUS CHRIST, AS OUR EXAMPLE, TOOK ON THE TROUBLES OF THE TROUBLED SCRIPTURE, WRITTEN A LONG TIME AGO, WAS WRITTEN TO ENCOURAGE US TODAY…SO WE CAN BE LIKE CHRIST WE’RE GOING TO NEED A LOT OF GOD’S HELP TO LIVE IN HARMONY…AND BE LIKE CHRIST BUT…WHEN WE GET ALONG WITH OTHERS, AS WELL AS JESUS GETS ALONG WITH US, GOD WILL GET THE GLORY!…
