Dr. Farmer grew up in Canada, and received her BSc in Chemistry from McGill University in Montreal. She moved to warmer climates to earn her Master’s in Environmental Science, Policy and Management and her PhD in Chemistry, both from the University of California at Berkeley. Her research focused on forest-atmosphere interactions. At CMKC he led the establishment of the Environmental Health Program (EHP). The program has assessed thousands of homes and schools, providing patient families, childcares, and schools with resources to assist them in identifying and reducing indoor environmental exposures that may result in health problems for children. During his time there, the program received over $7 million in program and research grants and won three national awards, including the HUD Secretary’s Award for Healthy Homes. Grant funding also supported a variety of research projects focusing on indoor environmental health issues, environmental allergens, home environmental interventions, exposure assessment, and more recently on geospatial analysis of health disparities and social determinants of health. Kevin is a co-author on more than 30 academic research publications and the primary author of the Building Performance Institute’s Healthy Housing Principles Reference Guide. He teaches professional courses in environmental health assessment and investigations, environmental measurement and sampling, building science, and healthy homes. Mr. Kennedy is a Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant and previously worked as an environmental analytical chemist, research scientist in extractive metallurgy, and in a previous life, was a historic home restoration carpenter and woodworker. This week we will explore cannabis production, the worker health issues it poses and how we can learn from this new and quickly expanding area. Her most recent paper with Tara Nordgren and Mark Hernandez is on Bioaerosol Exposures and Respiratory Diseases in Cannabis Workers. Tess Eidem’s doctoral research focused on developing novel antibiotics against bacterial pathogens, and her scientific career has centered on bringing modern microbiology and RNA biology practices to promote human health. Leveraging her scientific expertise, Dr. Eidem transitioned into the cannabis industry where she spent four years working directly in cannabis production and quality management. This unique experience allowed her to combine her hands-on skills in manufacturing with microbiology and product safety as a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) to help cannabis cultivators minimize potential hazards within their facilities and in their products. Having witnessed firsthand the challenges of microbial contamination in the cannabis industry, Dr. Eidem returned to the University of Colorado Boulder, where she currently works as a Senior Research Scientist in the Aerobiology and Disinfection Laboratory, with a focus on practical building science. We have wanted to get Dr. Krause on the show for a long time now and the stars have lined up. Dr. David Krause is the founder of Healthcare Consulting and Contracting (HC3). He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and Toxicologist, with 30 years of experience in public health, occupational hazard assessments, and indoor air quality. David received his Doctorate in Environmental and Occupational Health and Master of Science in Public Health Toxicology from the University of South Florida, College of Public Health in Tampa, FL. He is a nationally recognized expert in risk assessment, workplace exposures to pathogens and hazardous chemicals, health care facilities, Legionnaires’ disease, combustion products, flame retardants, indoor air quality, and mold. From 2008 to 2011 Dr. Krause served as the State Toxicologist for the Florida Department of Health. During his tenure as State Toxicologist Dr. Krause led state-wide investigations into the potential health effects of corrosive emissions from Chinese Drywall, sources of carcinogens in the Acreages Pediatric Cancer Cluster, and human health risks throughout the Deep Water Horizon oil spill response. Dr. Krause reviewed and approved all of the state’s ATSDR program health hazard evaluations and fish and seafood consumption advisories. Florida’s fish and seafood consumption advisories considered human health risks due to mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Developing health advisory levels for chemicals in drinking water and human health screening levels for petroleum products and PAHs in coastal waters and beach sediments were among the responsibilities of Dr. Krause while serving as the State Toxicologist. In 2009 he co-authored the Guidelines for the Surveillance, Investigation, and Control of Legionnaires’ Disease in Florida. As a volunteer for the American Industrial Hygiene Association Dr. Krause co-authored and edited the AIHA Guideline for the Recognition, Evaluation, and Control of Legionella in Building Water Systems, in 2015 and the 2nd edition in 2022. David is a member of the ACGIH Bioaerosols Committee and was a contributing author for the ACGIH 2021 White Paper on Engineering Controls for Bioaerosols in Non-Industrial/Non-Healthcare Settings. Miller has served on many national and international committees on the regulation of mycotoxins as well as on mold and dampness in the built environment. This includes on the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology committee that produced practice parameters for environmental allergens. He was chief editor of the American Industrial Hygiene Association “Green Book” (2008, 2020) and “Field Guide” (1996, 2005) that lay out guidelines for addressing mold and dampness in public buildings. He drafted several chapters of the recent ACGIH Bioaerosols guidelines, second edition. In 2013, Miller was elected as a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. Over the years he has been an active volunteer and filled various association leadership roles. Pete is RIA’s “Resident” Historian and an archival resource to the industry. In 2008, Pete received RIA’s most prestigious honor for excellence in restoration, the Martin L. King award. In 2012 RIA made Pete the second honorary member to its association, only the third such honor in RIA’s 75 years. When Cliff Zlotnik entered the field of insurance repair in 1974 the industry was embryonic. Cliff is inquisitive, creative with a talent for problem solving. Cliff learned the business of insurance repair by doing it. Using his disaster repair business as a laboratory, he developed methods, procedures, and products to successfully accomplish tasks which were previously undoable. We talk to a stellar group of academics about how to determine what deep energy retrofits will do to IEQ. Pawel Wargocki is professor at the Technical University of Denmark. He graduated from the Warsaw University of Technology in Poland. He received his Ph.D. from the Technical University of Denmark in 1998, where he has been teaching and performing research ever since. He has more than 25 years of experience in research on human requirements in indoor environments. He is best known for his seminal work demonstrating that poor indoor environmental quality affects the performance of office work and learning. Other work influenced requirements for ventilation and air cleaning. Recent research includes studies on human emissions, sleep quality, the development of IEQ rating schemes, and the performance of green buildings. He has collaborated with leading research institutions, universities, and industrial partners worldwide, such as the National University of Singapore, Jiaotong University in Shanghai, Syracuse Center of Excellence, United Technologies, and Google. He was President and long-standing board member of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ), President of the ISIAQ Academy of Fellows (previously Academy of Indoor Air Sciences), Vice President of the Indoor Air 2008 conference, and Chair of ASHRAE committees. He has received several awards for his work, including the Rockwool Award for Young Researchers, ASHRAE Ralph Nevins Award, ISIAQ’s Yaglou Award, and the Indoor Air Journal Best Paper Awards. Corinne Mandin earned her PhD in environmental chemistry from the University of Rennes, France. From 2013 to 2022, she coordinated the French Indoor Air Quality Observatory, a research program dedicated to indoor environmental quality created by the French government. In 2022, she joined the French institute for radiation protection and nuclear safety (IRSN) where she leads the epidemiology research group. Her research interests include human exposure to chemical and physical risk factors, both in living spaces and occupational settings, and related health effects. She is the Immediate Past President of the International Society for Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ). Dr. Wenjuan Wei is a research scientist at the Scientific and Technical Centre for Building (CSTB, France, since 2018). She received her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Tsinghua University (2009-2014). She was a guest researcher at the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST, USA, 2011-2012), and a post-doctoral researcher at CSTB (2016-2018). During her post-doctoral appointment, she was Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow of the European Commission’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions and PRESTIGE Fellow of Campus France. Dr. Wei is a specialist in indoor environmental quality (IEQ). She received the Yaglou Award of the ISIAQ Academy in 2022 and is the co-chair of the ISIAQ Scientific and Technical Committee 32 addressing environmental/climate impacts. Her research interests include the emission and transport of (semi) volatile organic compounds (S)VOCs, indoor heat and pollutant exposures, and IEQ index. She has participated in several European and French research projects, such as Horizon-ALDREN and Horizon-PARC. She is co-supervising 2 PhD theses. Dr. Miller let me know that he has something important to say and when he does, we listen. Prof. J. David Miller Dr. Miller received his secondary education at the University of New Brunswick, before studying at the University of Portsmouth in England, where he was also a NATO Science Postdoctoral Fellow. His post-university career started at Agriculture Canada, where he became head of the Fusarium mycotoxin program. He became a Professor & NSERC Research Chair in fungal toxins and allergens at Carleton University in 2000. In 2020, he was appointed as a Distinguished Research Professor. From 1999-2008, he was a visiting scientist and science advisor at Health Canada in the air health effects division. Among other tasks, Dr. Miller helped to draft the guidelines for mold and dampness published by Health Canada. Over the past several decades, he has co-managed many large studies of housing and health including in First Nations Communities. Dr. Miller has published >350 papers on fungi and fungal toxins and has co-written 10 books on the public health aspects of exposures to fungi, and has several patents. Miller has served on many national and international committees on mold and dampness in the built environment including on the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology committee that produced practice parameters for environmental allergens. He was chief editor of the American Industrial Hygiene Association “Green Book” (2008, 2020) and “Field Guide” (1996, 2005) that lay out guidelines for addressing mold and dampness in public buildings. Miller is an elected member of the International Academy of Indoor Air Sciences. Among other awards, he received the AgExcellence Award from Agriculture Canada, the Toxicology Forum Scott Award for contributions to toxicology, the Applied Research Award from the Ottawa Life Sciences Council, an AIHA award for contributions to the field of industrial hygiene and the 2017 Award of Merit from the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers Association. In 2013, Miller was elected as a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. In 2016, he received the prestigious NSERC Synergy Award for his research partnership with JD Irving, Limited. Gigi Kwik Gronvall, PhD During the COVID-19 pandemic, she led the Center’s ongoing efforts to track the development and marketing of molecular and antigen tests and serology tests , as well as the development of national strategies for COVID-19 serology (antibody) tests and SARS-CoV-2 serosurveys in the United States. She leads work on improving indoor air quality to reduce pathogen transmission, including guidance for K-12 schools , and is a public health advisor to the Baltimore City Public School system. She also has written about the scientific response to the COVID-19 pandemic , the contested origin of SARS-CoV-2 , and the implications for national and international security. Dr. Gronvall is the author of Synthetic Biology: Safety, Security, and Promise . In the book, she describes what can be done to minimize technical and social risks and maximize the benefits of synthetic biology, focusing on biosecurity, biosafety, ethics, and US national competitiveness—important sectors of national security . Dr. Gronvall is also the author of Preparing for Bioterrorism: The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s Leadership in Biosecurity . Through her description of major grants that represented the foundation’s investments in civilian preparedness, public health law, law enforcement, air filtering in buildings, influenza preparedness, and business preparedness, she constructed, for a nontechnical audience, a chronicle of early gains in US efforts to confront the threat of bioterrorism. Dr. Gronvall is a member of the Department of State’s International Security Advisory Board , which provides advice about arms control, disarmament, nonproliferation, and national security aspects of emerging technologies. She is a member of the Novel and Exceptional Technology and Research Advisory Committee (NExTRAC), which provides recommendations to the Director of the National Institutes of Health and is a public forum for the discussion of the scientific, safety, and ethical issues associated with emerging biotechnologies. As of 2023, she is a member of the National Academies’ Forum on Microbial Threats. From 2010 to 2020, Dr. Gronvall was a member of the Threat Reduction Advisory Committee, which provided the Secretary of Defense with independent advice and recommendations on reducing the risk to the United States, its military forces, and its allies and partners posed by nuclear, biological, chemical, and conventional threats. During 2014-2015, she led a preparatory group that examined the US government response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa as a case study for the Department of Defense’s strategic role in health security and made recommendations for future Department of Defense actions in response to disease outbreaks. She served as the Science Advisor for the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism from April 2009 until the Commission ended in February 2010. She has testified before Congress about the safety and security of high-containment biological laboratories in the United States and served on several task forces related to laboratory and pathogen security. Dr. Gronvall has investigated and presented policy recommendations on the governance of science to the Biological Weapons Convention in Geneva, Switzerland. In addition to being a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Dr. Gronvall is an Associate Editor of the journal Health Security (formerly Biosecurity and Bioterrorism ). She is a founding member of the Center. Prior to joining the faculty, she worked at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Civilian Biodefense Strategies. She was a National Research Council Postdoctoral Associate at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Fort Detrick, Maryland. Previously, Richard was a Senior Economist at the Food and Drug Administration, doing cost-benefit modeling of many FDA regulations and actions, including the Intentional Adulteration rule designed to harden food production facilities against terrorist attacks, the PHO GRAS determination aka ‘trans fat ban’, and a variety of other rules relating to food and medical devices. Richard also did preliminary modeling on FDA’s upcoming Nicotine Product Standard, a de facto ban on cigarettes that would cause many significant effects on public health and safety, as well as research to quantify and monetize the marginal per-unit effects of a variety of food contaminants, such as mycological toxins and arsenic in rice.…

William Bahnfleth is a professor of architectural engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. He has held previous positions as a principle investigator at the US Army Construction Research Laboratories and as a senior consultant for ZBA, Inc. He holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois and is a Registered Professional Engineer. At Penn State, Dr. Bahnfleth teaches courses on HVAC system design and indoor air quality. His research focuses on systems for sustainable management of indoor air quality with engineering controls, especially control of infectious aerosols. He is the author or co-author of nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications and 14 books/chapters. He is a past president of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and vice-president of the Indoor Environmental Quality Global Alliance. Dr. Bahnfleth was chair of the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force and currently chairs the project committee for ASHRAE Standard 241 Control of Infectious Aerosols. Dr. Bahnfleth is a fellow of ASHRAE, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the International Society for Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ). Among his ASHRAE awards are the Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award, the Donald Bahnfleth Environmental Health Award, and ASHRAE’s highest honor, the F. Paul Anderson Award. Many of our listeners know Carl has been an advocate for including health in IEQ assessments for years and has been working with sensitive people for decades. Recently Carl worked with ASHRAE to better define health. He also spoke at IAQA on including people in assessments. In addition, Carl has extensive insight into the IICRC S520 over the years and has some thoughts on the latest proposed revisions. Hayward Score Healthy Home Director Carl Grimes, HHS CIEC, has a unique combination of experiences. He has both the personal experience of how an unhealthy home created his disabling impact, plus the professional experience in various industries working in the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) field. Carl wrote Starting Points for a Healthy Habitat in 1999, detailing possibilities of what could occur in a house to make its occupants sick, how to identify what was happening, what to do about it, what not to do, and how to verify the results. The book led to an invitation to speak at the national conference of the Indoor Air Quality Association, which led to an invitation to serve on a committee that wrote the first mold remediation standard. This was followed by revising the ANSI accredited water damage restoration standard, duct cleaning standards for two organizations, fire residue in HVAC systems, and eventually to the creation of IAQA’s Home Health Committee. Under his leadership a new course was developed in partnership with the National Center for Healthy Housing and Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City: Healthy Home Assessment: Principles and Practice. Other activities included serving on the Board of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ) as the Vice President of Practice, on the ethics committee of the International Society of Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE), the Joint Task Force workgroup of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology and the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI-ACAAI). The latter developed four medical practice parameters for allergists plus an entire issue of a leading peer reviewed journal on mold. With all the wildfires, train wrecks and recycling fires this show from 3-23-12 is as relevant today as it was then. Let’s learn from those that have been there and done that Marty King and Ed Light. Martin King was the Restoration Industries Association Technical Adviser for 30 years, where he developed a broad range of restoration procedures and published over 300 articles in trade journals. He also served as CEO of Martin Churchill Associates, Inc. Damage Investigators and Appraisers and has investigated and prepared formal reports on over 2000 property damage cases. Recently Light N King have been working together to improve the knowledge and science behind fire damage restoration and repair. Unfortunately, fire damage and restoration issues often times take a back seat to more “sexy” mold. It seems that mold gets all the attention even though fire damage is an extremely important issue. Ed Light holds degrees in Environmental Science from the University of Massachusetts (B.S.) and Marshall University (M.S.), is a Senior Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, has authored over 40 scientific publications on assessment and control of the indoor environment and has chaired several national scientific committees. In the 1980’s, Ed established the West Virginia Department of Health IAQ Program, pioneering efforts to resolve exposure issues related to formaldehyde, asbestos, and termiticides. In the 1990’s, he developed widely used protocols for addressing IEQ complaints (published by EPA, NIOSH and ISIAQ) and managing air quality in occupied buildings under construction (for SMACNA, promulgated by ANSI). As a consultant, Ed has directed more than 1000 multi-disciplinary IEQ investigations, ranging from the White House to the South Pole Station. This week we honor and memorialize Hal Levin an IAQ Pioneer by remastering the first of a 2 part show that was done on April 30, 2010. A nice obituary for Hal can be found at https://www.ashrae.org/news/esociety/in-memory-of-hal-levin Hal Levin was a Research Architect with Building Ecology Research Group, Santa Cruz, California. Mr. Levin conducted research and consulted on building’s impacts on occupant health and comfort as well as on the larger environment. Since 1978 his work focused on the integration of knowledge about indoor and outdoor air pollution as well as other risk factors into the design, construction, and operation of residential, educational, and commercial buildings and communities. Hal contributed to the design of many award-winning buildings including the design of ventilation, building materials’ selection, energy conservation, and total environmental quality. He also contributed to the scientific and professional advancements in the fields of life-cycle analysis and risk assessment as indicators of the sustainability of building designs and practices. He coined the term “building ecology” in the late 1970s (first published an article by that title in 1981), focusing on the dynamic and interdependent relationships between buildings, their occupants, and the larger environment. Hal was a leader in numerous professional and scientific societies and received awards from several including ASHRAE's Environmental Health Award in 2008. He was also the Executive Director of ISIAQ, the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate, and President of the Indoor Air Institute. Hal was an avid baseball player and pitched competitively in an over-25 hardball league in San Jose, California. Dr. Connie Araps has an extensive background in chemistry, semiconductor technology and advanced engineering for manufacturing. She has a B.S. in chemistry from Rutgers University and received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Princeton University, where she published research on bio-medicinal chemistry. As a research scientist and technology executive in the pharmaceutical industry and at IBM for over 20 years, she authored 16 US patents and numerous publications in the areas of biochemistry, material science and photochemistry. Dr. Araps is currently the president of Prometheus Strategies, which provides chemistry consulting services to companies in the field of advanced air and surface cleaning technologies. Dr. Araps presented a seminar entitled an “Overview of Reactive Indoor Air Cleaning Technologies at the 2023 ASHRAE Winter Conference. She has overseen chemical, microbiological and toxicology studies conducted at licensed laboratories and major research centers to better understand photohydrolytic oxidation technology and assess its efficacy and safety. In collaboration with Dr. David Crosley, a leading physical chemist who has published widely in the area of atmospheric hydroxyl radical chemistry, Dr Araps co-authored a definitive analytical chemical study that validated photohydrolytic oxidation technology’s mode of action and was published in the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association (2017). Dr. Araps is a consultant to The Pyure Company and the Chair of Pyure’s Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Kishor Khankari is the president and founder of AnSight LLC. He is a specialist in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Kishor has several years of experience in providing consulting services that have resulted in optimized solutions to a wide variety of engineering problems. A noted expert in his field, he has a Ph.D. in CFD from the University of Minnesota and has regularly published in several technical journals. The Moisture Mob series has been quite the learning experience. Today we wrap up the flooring panel and dive into how moisture affects various types of flooring. Bob Blochinger will discuss his take on how concrete chemistry affects flooring and Dr. Ralph Moon will go over his recent research on how different types of flooring are affected by moisture issues. Mickey Lee will weigh in on his lessons learned from over 30 years in the industry. Bob Blochinger was raised in New York City, working in the family construction business. He moved to Florida for college, majoring in business management and worked seasonally in the hospitality industry. Bob began his career in the flooring industry in 1970, offering carpet cleaning and installations while specializing in water and fire damage restoration work. In the early 1980’s he expanded into the retail department store sector providing installation of floor covering sales. During the 1990’s his company started to service the architectural and interior design trade with high-end floor covering product sales and installations for residential, commercial and industrial applications. In 1990, Bob attended Southern Tech GA, specializing in technical training for carpet manufacturing and inspection. This started his career in forensic review of floor covering products that have a negative impact on performance, appearance and/or use. He is a multi-discipline flooring consultant. Bob also works as an expert witness, inspector and investigator for law firms, condominium associations and flooring manufacturers. He consults for flooring projects on bid package formatting and review, installation supervision and maintenance procedures. Bob’s oversight consultation assignments often require moisture testing of concrete for public works projects and private corporations tracking major installations from the retail store to the manufacturing facility. Ralph Moon, PhD is a Building Scientist with more than 42 years of consulting experience in the areas of duration of loss studies, material testing, risk assessment, project management, industrial hygiene, and indoor air quality assessment. Dr. Moon has published over 60 peer reviewed and 40 technical articles and papers and is a frequent expert witness on insurance-related claims and projects. Dr. Moon has a unique background that combines extensive field experience, seminar development and presentations, research, and legal services in IAQ, building science and disaster restoration. Mickey Lee is currently a private consultant providing consulting, training, research and writing services in the fields of property damage restoration, psychrometrics, drying science, mold remediation and structural drying after water intrusions. Mr. Lee retired from the Munters Corp (US) in 2011 after serving in various roles for over 20 years. At various points Mr. Lee was Vice-President – Global Technology & Sustainability for Munters AB – MCS and Global and National Technical & Training Manager for Munters Corp (US). He was responsible for training program development, curriculum writing and course facilitation in addition to managing projects for structural drying and restoration of commercial buildings of every type. He also has extensive experience in application of air treatment technology in restorative drying projects, corrosion-control methods, mold mitigation and humidity control in commercial and industrial facilities while working with Munters Corporation – Moisture Control Services Division. Recognizing his vast experience in water damage restoration the IICRC asked him to lead the development of their Commercial Drying Specialist certification. Michael Robert Lubliner is a Senior Energy Advisor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He previously worked at Washington State University Extension Energy Program as Building Science Residential Technical Lead at the Washington State Energy Office. He is internationally recognized for his 35 years of significant contributions to residential building science R&D of emerging technology and building systems engineering. He currently provides technical support at ORNL working with the Building Science Advisor and low-income weatherization programs. Over the years, Lubliner worked to design, implement and evaluate utility energy efficiency incentive programs, and support; EPA Energy Star and Indoor Air Plus, DOE Zero Energy Ready and NAHB Energy Value Housing Awards. Lubliner is a subject matter expert in areas of new and existing single and multi-family site built and manufactured housing sectors. He is a member of ASHRAE working to support energy efficiency, durability, and indoor air quality. He provided technical support to state residential energy code from 1986-2022. He utilizes his effective and passionate communications style and wisdom from 35 years in the “school of hard knocks”, communicating with government agencies, utilities, developers, sub-contractors, supply chain manufacturers/distributors, building code officials, DIY and others. André Desjarlais is the Program Manager for the Building Envelope and Materials Research Program at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He has been involved in building envelope and materials research for over 45 years, first as a consultant and, for the last 30 years, at ORNL. Areas of expertise include building envelope and material energy efficiency, moisture control, and durability. The ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2022, Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality has been under the microscope with COVID and now RSV, Flu, etc. The standard has been the topic of many comments and critiques. This week we interview three committee members to get their perspective. Brendon Burley, PhD, PE, LEED AP has been in the design industry since 1998 providing freelance CAD services for a number of clients in the Philadelphia area before moving on to work on his degrees and research at The Pennsylvania State University. For the past 14 years he has been focused on designing health care and higher education projects, mostly in the mid-Atlantic region. His projects range from laboratory equipment installations to medical center expansions and replacements, including projects involving advanced imaging equipment, medical and research containment facilities, and clean rooms. In addition to his work experience, he has been a member of ASHRAE since 2011 where he has served as a member of Standard 62.1 Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality, Standard 170 Ventilation for Health Care Facilities, and the Environmental Health Committee. He currently serves as the chair for Standard 62.1. Jennifer Isenbeck, PE, LEED AP is currently a staff engineer with Moffitt Cancer Center. In the Planning, Design and Construction department, she works with various consultants on implementing best practices in healthcare design, campus infrastructure as well as providing design reviews, commissioning oversight and project implementation into operations. Prior to this role, she was Director of Operations (Facilities) for various corporate and academic institutions. Jennifer is currently chair of ASHRAE MTG.EBO (Effective Building Operations), past Chair of ANSI/ASHRAE Std 62.1 (2019-2022), DRC, Society Board of Directors (2013-2016). She currently is a member of ASHRAE Standards and Publications Committees. Meghan K. McNulty, PE, LEED AP is a Senior Project Engineer at Servidyne, in Atlanta, GA. She works with building owners and operators to reduce energy and emissions while improving indoor air quality in existing buildings. She specializes in investigating and modeling energy use, assessing ventilation systems, and compliance with local building energy policies. Meghan is a Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Georgia and LEED Accredited Professional in Operations and Maintenance (LEED AP O+M). She joined Servidyne in 2013 with a Master of Engineering from Virginia Tech and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Princeton University. It’s always great to have the Restoration Industry Global Watchdog join us and this week we also welcome his SW Florida HVAC expert and friend Rick Sims. This show will not only give us some insight into the current events in Florida but will go into some HVAC related issues that are front and center in the industry today. Rick Sims is a Florida mechanical contractor with over forty years experience in dealing with Climate Zone One moisture levels. Rick serves on the Mechanical Technical Advisory Committee for the Florida Building Commission and teaches code related topics all over Florida. Rick has been teaching HVAC professionals since 1987. Rick has collected field data for Andrew Ask for many years and has assisted in research projects involving use of dehumidifiers with central air conditioning systems. Pete Consigli is a Restoration Industry Association (RIA) Certified Restorer (CR) and Water Loss Specialist (WLS) and has been a member of the Restoration Industry Association since 1977. Over the years he has been an active volunteer and filled various association leadership roles. Pete is RIA’s “Resident” Historian and an archival resource to the industry. In 2008, Pete received RIA’s most prestigious honor for excellence in restoration, the Martin L. King award. In 2012 RIA made Pete the second honorary member to its association, only the third such honor in RIA’s 75 years. The RIA recognized Pete in 2021 at their 75th Diamond Anniversary Convention in Orlando, Florida by naming its new scholarship program, “The RIA Pete Consigli Educational Scholarship Award” in his honor. RIA presents the award at its Annual Convention and Exposition. When asked, Pete advises the RIA education committee and staff on matters impacting the restoration industry and its members. In his 5th decade in the industry Pete enjoys his reoccurring role on IAQradio+ as the “Restoration Global Watchdog. Bailes III, PhD, is founder and owner of Energy Vanguard in Decatur, Georgia. Like many in the field of building science and green building, he is multi-faceted: His academic credentials in physics (BS, MS, MST, and PhD all in that field) give him a solid foundation in the science that underlies buildings. Having taught physics at the high school and college levels, he’s adept at explaining technical concepts in a way that people new to green building can understand. In addition, he has practical, hands-on experience. He built a high-performance home out of structural insulated panels, doing much of the work himself, and ran a home performance contracting business. Numerous homes in the Atlanta area had their ducts sealed and crawl spaces encapsulated by Dr. Bailes himself. Between his first and second businesses in this field, he gained more green building experience by working as the regional manager for the EarthCraft House program in the Southeast. Dr R Subramanian (“Subu”) is a Senior Scientist at the Environment and Sustainability Center (ESC) of the Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute (QEERI), where he leads QEERI’s research on sensors for air quality and climate, with applications in outdoor air quality monitoring and forecasting, IAQ management, and measurement of GHG emissions. He is also a research fellow at the Kigali Collaborative Research Centre (Rwanda) and an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA, USA). His recent accomplishments include leading the development of the Real-time Affordable Multi-Pollutant (RAMP) monitor, co-leading the deployment of a 50 RAMP network in and around Pittsburgh, PA, and establishing the Africa qualité de l’air (AfriqAir) monitoring network in many cities across Sub-Saharan Africa. This week we welcome Ruth Ann Norton President & CEO of the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative for a discussion on healthy homes, the new funding in the Inflation Reduction Act and what a successful organization looks like. Ruth Ann Norton, President & CEO of the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative, joined the organization in 1993 and has led its development into one of the nation’s most effective and foremost authorities on healthy housing and its impact on the social determinants of health and racial equity. An expert on lead poisoning prevention, healthy homes and the intersection of climate, energy and health, Ruth Ann directs GHHI’s national strategy, policy framework and services to integrate climate, healthcare and healthy housing as a platform for improved health, economic, educational and social outcomes for low-income communities. She broadened the organization’s mission by designing the GHHI comprehensive model in 2009 in partnership with HUD and CDC that is built on a framework of cross-sector collaboration. GHHI works in over 75 partner jurisdictions to implement its model that effectively integrates resources to comprehensively deliver lead hazard reduction, healthy homes, energy efficiency and housing rehabilitation interventions. She has been at the forefront in building the business case for healthcare investments in housing to address the social determinants of health and racial equity. Ms. Norton serves as a member of: the EPA Children’s Health Protection Advisory Committee, the National Leadership Academy for the Public’s Health, the National Council of State Housing Agencies’ National Advisory Group, the Ohio Asthma Council, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center For Population Health Information Technology Advisory Board. Trent Darden is SVP of Operations, US East at First Onsite Property Restoration. He was formerly the COO and spent 20 years working at Rolyn Companies of Rockville, MD. Trent started with Rolyn in 2000 as a Project Manager, where he worked exclusively on large loss insurance claims, handling all related estimating and general project management. In 2007, he was named the Vice President of Rolyn’s Estimating and Consulting Department. As Rolyn’s Chief Operating Officer, Trent worked with all of their offices to ensure delivery of the quality service our clients know and expect. A Virginia native, Mr. Darden has lived in the Tidewater area for over forty years. He began working in construction immediately following high school, and throughout his college career at Tidewater Community College and Old Dominion University where he pursued a degree in business. Tom Peter, MS, CIH is Senior Vice President – Regulatory Business Practice at First Onsite Property Restoration. He was formerly the CEO of Insurance Restoration Specialists of East Brunswick, NJ. Tom has supervised just about every type of hazardous waste, indoor environmental quality, mold remediation, water damage restoration project there is and all while in the shoes of a Certified Industrial Hygienist. This week we focus on the Management of Chemicals in Indoor Environments. William Bahnfleth is a professor of architectural engineering at the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in University Park, PA, where he has been employed since 1994. Previously, he was a Senior Consultant for ZBA, Inc. in Cincinnati, OH and a Principal Investigator at the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory in Champaign, IL. He holds BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois, where he also earned a bachelor of music degree in instrumental performance. His is a registered professional engineer. Dr. Bahnfeth is the author or co-author of more than 170 technical papers and articles and 14 books and book chapters. He consults on the design of chilled water thermal energy storage systems and has been involved in more than 20 projects world-wide. Dr. Bahnfleth is a fellow of ASHRAE, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the International Society for Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ). He has served ASHRAE in a variety of capacities, including Student Branch Advisor, Chapter Governor, Technical Committee and Standing Committee Chair, and as Director-at-Large, Vice President, Treasurer, and 2013-14 Society President. His honors include a 1st place ASHRAE Technology Award, Transactions Paper Award, Distinguished Service and Exceptional Service Awards, The Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award, the E.K. Campbell Award of Merit and the F. Paul Anderson Award. He is also a recipient of the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society’s World-Class Engineering Faculty Award. Dustin Poppendieck is a environmental engineer at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He received his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2002. He is a fellow of the International Society for Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ). Dustin has been investigating indoor air chemistry since 2002. Most of his efforts have involved characterizing primary emission sources and heterogenous reactions at material surfaces. He has investigated emissions from kerosene can lamps used by nearly a billion people throughout the developing world, spray polyurethane foam, non-smoldering cigarette butts and indoor air cleaning devices. In addition, Dustin has studied the disinfection of biologically contaminated building materials (i.e., anthrax) using high concentrations of ozone, chlorine dioxide, hydrogen peroxide and methyl bromide. Alison Savage, M.P.H., is a Biologist in the Indoor Environments Division (IED) in the Office of Radiation and Indoor Air (ORIA) at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is the current team leader of the Scientific Analysis Team. Since joining IED in 2018, she has worked on a wide variety of indoor air quality (IAQ) issues including reducing exposure to wildfire smoke in indoor environments, air cleaning and filtration, indoor chemistry , indoor exposure to particulate matter, and low-cost air sensors for IAQ, as well as IAQ issues related to emergency preparedness, response, and recovery for wildfires and floods. Ms. Savage manages the EPA task order that supported the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) Emerging Science on Indoor Chemistry consensus study. She also manages the task order supporting the ongoing NASEM consensus study on the Health Risks of Indoor Exposures to Fine Particulate Matter and Practical Mitigation Solutions. Prior to joining EPA, she served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Peru. This week we welcome Dr. Charles Weschler for a show about a topic of great interest to IEQ and restoration professionals. Restoration contractors are inundated with claims about equipment to help on projects when fires, wildfires and other odor events affect indoor environments. What should practitioners know about ozone, hydroxyls, TI02 and other technologies when investigating or remediating indoor environments? We talk to a world renowned professor about this issue. Charles J. Weschler -After completing his Ph.D. in Chemistry at University of Chicago (1974), Dr. Weschler did postdoctoral studies with Fred Basolo at Northwestern University. In 1975 he joined Bell Laboratories (Physical Chemistry Division) and was made a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in 1986. He worked at Bell Labs and its successor institutions for twenty-five years. In 2001 he accepted positions at the Environmental & Occupational Health Science Institute, Rutgers University, and the International Centre for Indoor Environment and Energy, Technical University of Denmark, and in 2010 joined the Building Science department at Tsinghua University as an ongoing Visiting Professor. He continues in those positions. His research interests include chemicals in indoor environments, their sources, their chemistry, and their interactions with building occupants. From 1999-2005 Weschler served on the US EPA’s Science Advisory Board. He has also served on four committees for the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. From 2012 to the present, he has been an advisor to the Sloan Foundation’s program on Chemistry in Indoor Environments. He was elected to the International Academy of Indoor Air Sciences in 1999 and received the Pettenkofer Award, its highest honor, in 2014. Weschler has also received the 2017 Haagen-Smit Prize from Atmospheric Environment; been made “Distinguished Visiting Professor” at Tsinghua University (2018); awarded “Doctor Technices Honoris Causa” from the Technical University of Denmark (2018); and was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2020). We will focus on what the findings mean for practitioners! David C. Dorman, DVM, PhD is a professor of toxicology in the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences at North Carolina State University. Dr. Dorman’s research interests include neurotoxicology, nasal toxicology, pharmacokinetics, and cognition and olfaction in animals. Dr. Dorman is an elected fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences. Dr. Dorman is a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology and the American Board of Toxicology. He has chaired or served on several National Research Council committees and is a National Associate of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. He completed a combined PhD and veterinary toxicology residency program at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University. Rima Habre, ScD is an associate professor of environmental health and spatial sciences at the University of Southern California (USC). She leads the Exposure Sciences Research Program in the USC National Institute of Environmental Health P30 Center. Her expertise lies in environmental health, air pollution, and exposure sciences. Her research aims to understand the effects of complex air pollution mixtures in the indoor and outdoor environment on the health of vulnerable populations across the life course. Dr. Habre’s expertise spans measurement, spatiotemporal and geographic information system–based modeling, and mobile health approaches to assessing personal exposures and health risk. She co-chairs the Geospatial Working Group in the nationwide National Institute of Health’s Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes program. Dr. Habre received her ScD in environmental health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Megan E. Harries, PhD is a program officer with the Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. She is the director of the Committee on Emerging Science on Indoor Chemistry, which authored the recently released report on Why Indoor Chemistry Matters. Trained as an analytical chemist, Dr. Harries received a BA from Fordham University and a PhD from the University of Colorado Boulder. Prior to joining the National Academies, she was the recipient of a National Research Council Research Associateship, which she spent at the National Institute of Standards and Technology developing methods for more sensitive and repeatable chemical characterization of trace forensic evidence. He earned his Doctorate in Public Health from CUNY, and is a recognized contributor to NYC DOHMH, NIEHS, HUD and WHO guidance documents. Bill is an active advocate for changes in law and policy that can improve health outcomes at the population level. He is the primary author of NYC Local Law 13 - 2014 that prohibits the use of paper-faced gypsum boards in moisture-prone building areas, which serves to reduce the occurrence of mold growth and the incidence of asthma. Bill is an active health researcher and is the lead author of the article Misalignment between Clinical Mold Antigen Extracts and Airborne Molds Found in Water-Damaged Homes published in the May 2022 issue of the Annals of the American Thoracic Society. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he has conducted environmental assessments for schools, NGO's and businesses throughout NYC to assess HVAC systems and implement ventilation controls to reduce airborne concentration levels of SARS-CoV-2 and thereby reduce risk of transmission of COVID-19 in schools and workplaces. Bill currently serves as a court-appointed independent consultant on mold, water damage and ventilation issues to the NYC Public Housing Authority (NYCHA). Chris Mikrut is a Senior Investigator at Microecologies, Inc., an indoor environmental consulting firm in New York City. He earned his Masters Degree in Environmental and Occupational Health Science from Hunter College where he was awarded the prestigious National Institute of Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Scholarship. Chris is an EPA Certified Lead Risk Assessor and NYS Certified Mold Assessor, and over the past 10 years has conducted over 1,000 indoor air quality and indoor environmental inspections in residential and commercial settings involving water damage and mold growth conditions, chemical vapor emissions, construction dust and crystalline silica infiltration, lead-based paint hazards, and other indoor environmental exposure factors. Chris has been a key contributor to program development for response to mold, water damage, and exhaust ventilation issues in NYC Public Housing Authority's (NYCHA) and administration of classroom and field training for NYCHA staff. Brad Prezant is an evidence-based public health scientist with a background in epidemiology, occupational health & hygiene, and ergonomics. Until the company was sold in 2007, he operated Prezant Associates, Inc. in Seattle, providing consulting, training, and laboratory services for 20+ years. He is currently Principal Consultant at PREZANT Environmental in Melbourne, Australia. After migrating to New Zealand in 2008, Mr. Prezant spent 3 years at Massey University researching a variety of occupational health issues including solvent exposure to auto body painters, fumigant and VOC exposures from shipping containers, and dust exposures to woodworkers. He previously was Chief Editor of AIHA’s first edition of Recognition, Evaluation, and Control of Indoor Mold, an author of several other standard of care documents, and is the Past Vice President for Practice of ISIAQ (International Society of Indoor Air Quality & Climate). For over 40 years David has been a force for good in the healthy homes movement. It started early in his career as a research scientist at Georgia Tech and continues today at his current positions at the NCHH and as the Director, US Collaborating Center for Research and Training on Housing Related Disease and Injury, World Health Organization/Pan American Health Organization. From lead paint to gas stoves and everything in between David has been a tireless advocate for healthy housing. We look forward to his thoughts on accomplishments, current events and the future of healthy housing. David E Jacobs, PhD, CIH is currently Chief Scientist at the National Center for Healthy Housing, where he recently completed a major study on indoor air quality in homes with gas stoves. He directs the US Collaborating Center for Healthy Housing Research and Training for the World Health Organization. He is also an adjunct associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health (Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Division). Jacobs holds degrees in Environmental Engineering, Science and Technology Policy, Environmental Health and Political Science. He is a licensed lead paint risk assessor and a board-certified industrial hygienist. He was a contributing author to the recently released Guidelines on Housing and Health from the World Health Organization. He helped launch the Healthy Homes Initiative in the US in 1999 with a report to Congress, where he has testified on several occasions (most recently in 2021). Dr. Jacobs has led research related to childhood lead poisoning prevention, lead exposure assessment and mitigation, healthy housing, asthma, green building design and policy development. He also was the principal author of the Guidelines for the Evaluation and Control of Lead Based Paint Hazards, the standard industry reference in the field. He was the principal author of the President’s Task Force report on childhood lead poisoning prevention in 2000. Brian has been doing remediation for nearly 25 years and Roger is an entrepreneur and Founder of SUDOC, he also has a lengthy and fascinating history in world affairs. Brian Lester has been in the cleaning and restoration business since 1998 when he started as a carpet cleaner doing water extractions with a portable extraction machine. He has managed 1000s of drying jobs as well as countless mold remediation projects. He is currently the President of Indiana Mold Remediation and work with his brother and best friend providing remediation work to all of central Indiana. Brian also represents Dot cleaner as a product specialist having taken part in the design and implementation of the dot cleaning product directly into the remediation market. Dilute oxidation technology is new technology developed at Carnegie Mellon University. His friend Terry Collins is the inventor. The technology, which they refer to as the NT7 molecule is an oxidizing catalyst which mimics the action the takes places in the human body. They use this new technology because it reduces the chemical burden of remediation contractors. Because Dot is a dry form product, their waste and shipping burden is markedly lower. Roger Berry is a passionate and experienced CEO and investor in high-potential technology companies with a focus on sustainability. Two decades plus of experience in private equity, covering fundraising, team incubation, deal due diligence, sustainable technology development and ultimately as CEO for a series of technology companies, has prepared Roger for his current role in building a transformative sustainable chemistry company in Sudoc. Roger has experience in analyzing and managing turnarounds and start-up ventures. Roger was a Partner with TEM Capital, an early-to-growth stage fund manager focused on clean energy and sustainable resources. On behalf of TEM, Roger served as CEO of two businesses including Clean Electricity Generation (CEG), a company with proprietary clean energy technology. Roger was Head of Group Funds and Investor Relations for Climate Change Capital, a fund manager with over $1.6 billion of assets. From 2000 to 2006, Roger was a Managing Partner and co-founder of Liberty Global Partners, an advisory and placement firm focused on emerging markets private equity. Liberty Global Partners raised significant commitments from institutional investors and led the creation of the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association. Roger had formative experiences in the United States Congress and First Lady Hillary Clinton’s health care task force. He subsequently worked in international development and conflict resolution. Roger draws inspiration from the times he spent with historic figure Nelson Mandela and other leaders of South Africa’s transition to democracy. He first met President Mandela in 1993, before he became President, where he helped coordinate his testimony in front of the congressional International Affairs subcommittee on Africa. What do we know about particle behavior and how well do various mitigation processes work? We will talk to Dr. Gall about what his and other research shows about this important IEQ topic. Dr. Elliott Gall is an Associate Professor in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering Department in the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science at Portland State University. Dr. Gall’s primary technical specialties are physics and chemistry of indoor air quality, heat and mass transfer phenomena in built environments, human exposure to air pollution, indoor environmental quality and sustainable buildings, building HVAC, and urban air quality. During our first show J. David Miller, PhD mentioned how important Don was during the early research projects that led to solutions for common IEQ problems. This week we look forward to talking with Don about his contributions to our current understanding of indoor environments and his thoughts on what the future holds. Don Fugler spent 25 years conducting research projects for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), in the areas of residential energy use, ventilation, and indoor air quality. Between 1985 and 2010, he managed over 100 research projects. During that period, he published CMHC research reports; wrote and distributed summaries in Research Highlights and About Your House documents and lectured at conferences and meetings. Since 2011, Don’s consulting work has addressed indoor air quality and energy issues for federal departments, NGOs, and individuals. He is active on CSA standards committees (carbon monoxide sensors, residential depressurization) and CGSB (radon). He helped initiate ROCIS ( rocis.org ) and the Low Cost Monitoring Project through program design and development of the monitoring process participants would follow. He currently concentrates on the house-based factors, such as the entry rate of outdoor pollutants, the distribution of pollutants within the dwelling, the activities within the house that create particles, and the means of reducing the concentrations of particles and other measured pollutants. Over the past decade, Rob has become a well sought after writer and presenter on industry-related topics. After 2 years of COVID-19 research and real world experience what have we learned? Dr. Brosseau, now retired, was a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) School of Public Health from 2015 to 2018, where she was director of the Illinois Education and Research Center, which supported graduate and continuing education for occupational health and safety professionals and community outreach activities. She was also director of the UIC Center for Healthy Work. Dr. Brosseau began her career as an academic researcher and educator at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, where she directed the Industrial Hygiene Program. Her early research focused on the performance of respirator filters when exposed to hazardous aerosols such as silica and asbestos, and later expanded to include biological and infectious organisms. Her more recent research focused on respirator fit, using real-time methods and simulated workplace tasks to better understand how fit is influenced by realistic head and body motions. She continues to serve as a mentor and technical advisor on research projects and for businesses and organizations, including The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP). CIDRAP is a center within the University of Minnesota that focuses on addressing public health preparedness and emerging infectious disease response. Dr. Brosseau has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, delivered numerous platform research presentations, and has been an invited speaker at numerous local, national and international conferences and workshops. Dr. Miller is a Distinguished Research Professor at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario Canada. He and some others we will talk about have been instrumental in getting Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) recognized as a public health issue. We will learn about his career and how he and others were able to help ensure that IEQ is recognized as a public health issue that has science based guidance from cognizant authorities. When it comes to affecting change Dr. Miller says: “It’s hard to run away from evidence”. Prof. J. David Miller Dr. Miller received his secondary education at the University of New Brunswick, before studying at the University of Portsmouth in England, where he was also a NATO Science Postdoctoral Fellow. His post-university career at Agriculture Canada, and became head of the Fusarium mycotoxin program. He became a Professor & NSERC Research Chair in fungal toxins and allergens at Carleton University in 2000. In 2020, he was appointed as a Distinguished Research Professor. From 1999-2008, he was a visiting scientist and science advisor at Health Canada in the air health effects division. Among other tasks, Dr. Miller helped to draft the guidelines for mold and dampness published by Health Canada. Over the past several decades, he has co-managed many large studies of housing and health including in First Nations Communities. Dr. Miller has published >350 papers on fungi and fungal toxins and has co-written 10 books on the public health aspects of exposures to fungi, and has several patents. Miller has served on many national and international committees on mold and dampness in the built environment including on the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology committee that produced practice parameters for environmental allergens. He was chief editor of the American Industrial Hygiene Association “Green Book” (2008, 2020) and “Field Guide” (1996, 2005) that lay out guidelines for addressing mold and dampness in public buildings. Miller is an elected member of the International Academy of Indoor Air Sciences. Among other awards, he received the AgExcellence Award from Agriculture Canada, the Toxicology Forum Scott Award for contributions to toxicology, the Applied Research Award from the Ottawa Life Sciences Council, an AIHA award for contributions to the field of industrial hygiene and the 2017 Award of Merit from the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers Association. In 2013, Miller was elected as a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. In 2016, he received the prestigious NSERC Synergy Award for his research partnership with JD Irving, Limited. In the 1980’s, Ed established the West Virginia Department of Health IAQ Program, pioneering efforts to resolve exposure issues related to formaldehyde, asbestos, and termiticides. Terry Brennan is a building scientist and educator, who has studied buildings since the 1970’s. He was president and senior building scientist at Camroden Associates, Inc in Westmoreland NY from its founding in 1984 until 2019. Terry began his career as a physics major at Northeastern University, but somehow, some way got diverted into building science, working on the earliest research into radon problems and radon behavior in buildings, and moved on to energy and moisture issues. For the last 40 years, he’s spent more time crawling around damp basements and hot attics than most normal people would find pleasant. But in return for those decades of investigation, Terry knows a LOT about what makes buildings tick… how they go wrong… and how to make sure they don’t. Mr. Brennan has provided research, training, curriculum development, and program support for the USEPA, the National Center for Healthy Housing, building owners and managers, individual homeowners, and several state health departments. He is the primary author of the USEPA Moisture Control For Commercial Building Design, Construction, Operations And Maintenance Guidance ; A contributing author to the ASHRAE Indoor Air Quality Guide, the ASHRAE Residential Indoor Air Quality Guide, and the USEPA Building Air Quality: A Guide for Building Owners and Managers. Dr. Richard Corsi recently joined UC Davis as Dean of the College of Engineering. Prior to that he was Dean of the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science at Portland State University and for over 24 years he worked at The University of Texas, Austin where he taught numerous courses related to fluid mechanics, air pollution, and indoor air quality. Dr. Corsi served as Director of a highly-interdisciplinary group that spawned a generation of faculty engaged in research related to indoor air quality. He continues to conduct research on indoor air quality, with foci on physical and chemical processes that affect the fate and control of, and human exposure to, indoor pollutants of both outdoor and indoor origin. Dr. Corsi and his team have published nearly 270 peer-reviewed papers, and he has supervised over 120 students. Dr. Corsi has been engaged in national discussions related to layered risk reduction to reduce transmission of COVID-19 by aerosol particles. He has been a guest on webinars hosted by the National Academies, USEPA, National Tribal Air Association, and more. In addition, he has done over 100 print, television, and podcast interviews. From early in the pandemic his efforts have focused on lowering inhalation dose of virus-laden aerosol particles indoors. Dr. Corsi led an effort to develop an educational tool for assessing parallel interventions for lowering inhalation dose for aerosols and risk of infection in buildings. His concept of a low-cost and effective do-it-yourself air cleaner to combat virus-laden aerosol particles and wildfire smoke has become known worldwide as the Corsi-Rosenthal Box. Kevin founded HAVEN IAQ (TZOA) at the age of 23, after experiencing high levels of carcinogenic crystalline silica dust on industrial worksites. He conceptualized a wearable air quality monitor for global citizens that could crowdsource outdoor pollution data from thousands of devices onto city-wide maps in real-time, a product that won 'best inventions of 2015' awards from Time Magazine and Popular Science. Chris grew up working in the HVAC industry with his grandfather in North Texas. That experience has led to over 25 years in the trade. He spent most of his career thus far in the field as a service technician, installer, comfort advisor and owner of a business. After his time in the field, he served as a Technical Service Manager and trainer for a distributor of a major equipment line. He started his career with Aprilaire in 2015 and has filled multiple roles as a District Sales Manager and Regional Manager. Paul Schenck, MPH is a rehired, retiree that advises physicians about environmental contributors to illness and also is an advisor to the Connecticut Small Business Development Center as what could be described as their COVID health and safety person. She works with small businesses trying to establish appropriate procedures and responses to COVID issues. Paula was part of a group that established the Center for Indoor Environments and Health at UCONN. She developed multiple initiatives directed at improving indoor environments in schools and offices. At the UCONN Occupational Medicine clinic, Paula continues to teach residents and is called upon to provide guidance on environmental and/or workplace interventions as part of patient treatment. In the past she taught environmental health at UCONN, instructed in the masters in public health program, was a seminar leader on asthma and environment and coordinated segments on occupational health in the medical school. She was instrumental in the development of the Mold and Moisture Guidance for Clinicians book in 2004.…

Dr. Lstiburek received an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto, a master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto and a doctorate in Building Science Engineering from the University of Toronto. He has been a licensed Professional Engineer since 1982. The Wall Street Journal referred to him as "the dean of North American building science." Fast Company magazine called him "the Sherlock Holmes of construction". He is internationally recognized and his work has influenced building codes and standards in every climate zone. He is a recipient of the Carl Cash Award from ASTM, a "Becky" from the Ontario Building Envelope Committee (OBEC) and the EEBA Legacy Award all for lifetime contributions to building science. ACGIH has collaborated with ASHRAE on their most recent COVID document revisions and is in the midst of revising the 1999 Bioaerosols Assessment and Control book. The industry is anxiously awaiting this revision. Frank Mortl, ACGI Executive Director, is responsible for providing guidance and support to the Board of Directors while leading ACGIH®’s team of professionals who are committed to serving a membership that strives to deliver critically important industrial hygiene knowledge along a wide spectrum of topics ranging from air sampling instruments, bioaerosols, biological exposure indices, industrial ventilation, as well as threshold limit values (TLVs®) for chemical substances and physical agents. Neil Zimmerman, PhD, PE, CIH, FAIHA is a Professor Emeritus of Industrial Hygiene, retired after a 32 year career (1981-2013) as a professor, researcher and educator in the Industrial Hygiene Program of the School of Health Sciences, Purdue University. Dr. Zimmerman is an active member of the AIHA’s Academic Accreditation Committee, which is responsible for ABET accreditation of university IH programs and is a past Chair. He currently is an active member of the ACGIH Industrial Ventilation Committee and was also an active participant in the development of ACGIH’s recently released “ventilation for COVID-19” white papers. Dr. Zimmerman holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University, and MS in Environmental Engineering and PhD in Air and Industrial Hygiene from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is certified in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene (CIH). He has been affectionately referred to as Dr. Z by his many past students and is also known as “the Z-man”! Jack Springston has over 34 years’ experience in industrial hygiene and occupational health. He has been a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) since 1993, and is one of less than 50 active CIHs who also hold a sub-specialty certificate in Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ). He has also been a Certified Safety Professional since 1999. Jack is currently the Industrial Hygiene Services Manager, Branch Safety Officer, and Training Director for Atlas Technical in New York City, Albany, and Long Island. TWH's primary goal is to improve the well-being of the U.S. workforce by protecting their safety and enhancing their health and productivity. Total Exposure Health is a strategy to evaluate individuals’ exposures to hazards at work, from the environment, and lifestyle choices, integrating these evaluations with health promotions initiatives to better ensure the long-term health of the individual. TEH and TWH take a more holistic approach to health, safety and well being. The concepts are gaining traction and this week we have two of the leading proponents joining us. Dr. Jennifer Sahmel is a Managing Principal Scientist with Insight Exposure and Risk Sciences in Boulder, Colorado. She is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and a Certified Safety Professional with 25 years of experience in exposure assessment science and workplace health and safety. She has worked in a variety of public and private sector positions including the U.S. EPA’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics the National Park Service and Comprehensive Health Services at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. She earned her MPH degree in Environmental Health and Industrial Hygiene from the University of California at Berkeley and her PhD in Environmental Health at the University of Minnesota. She is a Research Fellow with the University of Minnesota’s Exposure Science and Sustainability Institute. She is also active in the American Industrial Hygiene Association and is a past member of their national board of directors. Colonel (ret) Kirk A. Phillips currently holds the position of Director, Air Force Office of Energy Assurance (OEA), Washington DC. Prior to his current position Kirk was the Health Safety and Environmental Practice Leader and Vice President at LJB Inc. In 2018, he retired as the BSC Associate Chief for Bioenvironmental Engineering (BE) in the Office of the Air Force Surgeon General. In 2014 he developed Total Exposure Health as a strategic initiative to institutionalize primary prevention in work, environmental and lifestyle exposures. Prior to his current assignment, Col Phillips was the Director of Policy and Programs for the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Environment, Safety and Occupational Health, Pentagon, Washington DC. Mr. Phillips entered the Air Force from a four-year AF ROTC scholarship in 1985. He obtained his BS in Aerospace Engineering and his MS in Engineering and Environmental Management. Colonel Phillips has held a broad range of leadership positions throughout the Air Force.…
