×This week's verse-by-verse study through the Book of Acts takes us through Chapter 24. We're looking at Acts 24, where Paul stands before Governor Felix, falsely accused. Though he counters his accusers with evidence of his innocence, his real hope is in what he confesses in Acts 24:14-15. Also interesting is how Paul views his imprisonment as an opportunity for the gospel (Phile 1, 9, 13, and Eph 6:20), what he asks churches to pray for him during his imprisonment (Col 4:3-4), and how he makes the most of the opportunity he has (Acts 24:24-25).…

During this season of Advent, we pause our verse-by-verse study through the Book of Acts to focus on our yearly Advent Series. This week Paul is dragged before the Sanhedrin, ordered struck by Ananias, and Jesus is with Paul in these dark moments. This will segue perfectly to our 2024 Advent series where we will hear the promise of "I am with you" to Issac, Jacob, Moses, and Joshua fulfilled in Immanuel, God with us.
In our text this week, Paul turns to the mob that just beat him, and rather than retaliate or attack, he graciously and respectfully shares the good news of Jesus and how encountering Jesus changed Paul's life. Though he is one of their own and shares the words of life, they still want to kill him. There is much to learn in this text from the example of Paul, about following Jesus through difficult times, and about how to share our own faith.…
This past week at Mars Hill Church, we continued our verse-by-verse of the Book of Acts by focusing on Acts 21:27-36. For more resources on this passage, head over to the Mars Hill website at pomh.org.
This week, we look at Acts 21:17-26 and Paul's arrival in Jerusalem. It was an extremely volatile time according to historians. One commentator summarizes it this way, " intense Jewish nationalism and political unrest. One insurrection after another rose to challenge the Roman overlords, and Felix brutally suppressed them all. This only increased the Jewish hatred f or Rome and inflamed anti-Gentile sentiments. It was a time when pro-Jewish sentiment was at its height, and friendliness with outsiders was viewed askance. Considering public relations, Paul’s mission to the Gentiles would not have been well received." And yet, read Acts 21:17-20 and we see the early church leaders and apostles unified, embracing, at peace, celebrating God's work, and worshiping, It's encouraging and a timely reminder for us today.…
Our verse-by-verse study through the book of Acts this week focuses on Acts 21:1-16, but as Teaching Pastor Neal Ledbetter reminds us, "the message Paul received in Acts 20:22-23 and how he responded in verse 24 is important to keep in mind as we study our text this week. In Acts 21:1-16, the disciples receive the same word Paul did in Acts 20:22-23, but they have a different human response to the divine word they received. Their response and Luke's wording Acts 21:4 might be confusing. John Stott summarizes Acts 21:4, saying, “Luke’s statement is a condensed way of saying that the warning was divine while the urging was human. After all, the Spirit’s word to Paul combined the compulsion to go with a warning of the consequences (20:22–23)." Our study and the questions this week will hopefully draw out this tension and our natural response to suffering."…
