Episode 36. Keegan Hipgrave – The heart-breaking decision: The journey from NRL star to medical retirement
Manage episode 376566912 series 3444972
In this episode I had the privilege of chatting to Keegan Hipgrave who played professionally in the NRL for 5 seasons, before having to medically retire from the game he loved at the age of 24. Multiple head knocks and concussions were what forced him out of the game with the last concussion leading to a constant 2 month headache. Since retirement, he has shifted his focus to helping others and is doing that in many ways. One of which through doing disability support work for What Ability. We talk about his time in the NRL, the moment his life changed forever after the passing of his best mate at the age of 17, finding his purpose and passion, the chat with his neurologist about medically retiring from the professional Rugby, and so much more!
Here are some key points that Keegan and I spoke about:
- Playing in the NRL
- Dealing with concussions
- Family, friends and support networks
- Seeing a psychologist
- The loss of his best mate at 17
- What Ability National Athlete Manager
- Sport life balance
- Trial and error in life
- The importance of friends
- Having a deep desire to be better every day
- Helping others
I hope you all enjoy listening to the conversation Keegan and I had, and can implement some of the incredible knowledge he shared, to help you all on your self improvement journeys. This is a must listen!!
