Negotiated assessment allows students to understand how the marking criteria translates into judgement about their work. By involving them in the process, they gain an appreciation of the complexities involved, gives them an opportunity to judge and to justify their own work and practise negotiation skills. At last years DEAP conference, Dave White shared his thoughts on 'A Sense of Presence', supported by Ian Truelove, during a time of refocusing and mass shift to online delivery. In this reflection, Dave and Ian recall the unexpected challenges they faced during last year's keynote, and those that unfolded throughout the academic year. Considering the obstacles that emerged and the knowledge gained, they describe how a true sense of presence was formed.
