On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. ×If you were unable to view the stream from this past Sunday, you're not alone! We unfortunately had a power outage during the service that wiped out our wifi connection. Here is the sermon Pastor Joel preached on Daniel chapter 1, "The Sovereign Hand of God." This is the first sermon in a 12-part series through the book of Daniel. It lays the groundwork for understanding that, just like in our own lives, Daniel is not the main character: God is!…
Today we continue our 8-week series in the book of 1 Peter. We saw last Sunday that God was/is at work to save us and sanctify us (conform us to the image of Christ). Today we will see in 1 Peter 1:13 - 2:3 that as a result of God's work, we are to "Live as Strangers" in this world. We are citizens of heaven with a different set of values and priorities than this world. If you would like to catch up with the ministries of Freedom Bible Church, and if you would like to follow along with the sermon notes, please use the link below: https://sonlife.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8911e78cced852ebe715d1dbb&id=00a8e0df81&e=0480e2b904…

When using money wisely, is it possible to enjoy it?
Over the years, there have been many attempts at explaining how followers of Jesus are supposed to give back to God. Give 10% to the church, tithe/offerings to "God's storehouse," or even "God will bless you twofold if you give money to the church!" What does the Bible actually say about giving back to God?…
How does a disciple of Jesus handle money wisely?
In this first sermon of the series, Pastor Joel shares profound, yet practical groundwork for dealing with money.

Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit to lead us and empower us to be His witnesses and walk in righteousness and freedom. We can never lose the Holy Spirit, but we can quench Him. Today we examine more attitudes and behaviors of our hearts and minds that quench the Spirit and His work in our lives.
