In Episode 6 of Season 3, we’re diving into one of the most nuanced and essential skills for admin professionals today: “Managing Up: Are Executives Open To It?”. Jodie joins us to unpack what managing up really means, how to approach it strategically (and respectfully), and why it’s a must-have skill for every modern admin. Jodie Mears is a strategic C-Suite Executive Assistant, LinkedIn Top Voice, and respected thought leader in the administrative profession. With over 20 years’ experience across aviation, energy, and digital industries, she now supports executives at Bentley Systems, blending high-level support with strategic business insight. She is the co-host of The Crodie Files podcast and an Advisory Board Member for The PA Show UK. Jodie is deeply passionate about elevating the admin profession through mentorship, speaking, and her highly sought-after coaching program. A certified Mental Health First Aider and Regional Wellness Lead, she also shares her insights in her monthly newsletter The Assist List and through industry publications. In this episode, Jodie shares honest insights from her 20+ year career, including what executives really think about being “managed up,” how to build trust without overstepping, and practical ways to position yourself as a strategic partner rather than just a task-doer. We’ve covered questions like: - What exactly does it mean to manage up , and how is it different from being proactive? - Are executives generally open to being “managed up,” or does resistance still exist? - What role does trust, emotional intelligence, and company culture play? - How can admins build credibility and influence in environments where managing up isn’t the norm? We’re also loving Jodie’s final words of wisdom: “For me, the game changer was developing my business acumen, staying ahead of our industry trends and being the person who brought information back to them and position yourself as a strategic partner who can manage up rather than waiting to be told you can now do that. The more you elevate yourself, the more indispensable you become. So that was something that stuck with me is it's all about you” So if you’ve ever felt unsure about how to influence upwards, advocate for your role, or be seen as a true business partner, this episode is for you. Jodie brings clarity, warmth, and wisdom to a topic that many admins navigate but few talk about openly. You can connect with Jodie on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jodiemears . Sims on the topic of “Own Your Evolution: Taking Charge of Your Admin Career”, In this inspiring episode we sit down with powerhouse admin leader and author Tara M. Sims to explore how admin professionals can take ownership of their careers, redefine their roles, and evolve with intention. From beauty school dreams to a transformative 11-year journey at Comcast, Tara shares how she found her "zone of genius" in the admin space and how her experience led to the writing of The Evolved Assistant. Together, they discuss the evolution of the role, the importance of visibility, and how assistants can advocate for themselves and their growth. Key Takeaways Following Unexpected Paths: Tara’s admin career began as a practical decision to accommodate her beauty school schedule, and ended up becoming her true calling. The Evolution of the Admin Role: Tara reflects on how the assistant role has shifted from task-driven to strategic, emphasizing the need for EAs to be part of decision-making and business conversations. Why She Wrote The Evolved Assistant: Sparked by the pandemic, Tara felt a calling to challenge outdated perceptions and empower assistants to embrace their full value and potential. Rejecting the "Servant" Narrative: A passionate discussion around the term servant leadership and why Tara prefers support leader - a phrase that respects the leadership and impact of admin professionals. Owning Your Career Growth: - Ask for development opportunities. - Track and communicate your impact. - Build visibility inside and outside your organization. - Join professional networks or create your own. - Don’t wait! Take one intentional step forward. Overcoming Plateaus: When you feel stuck, it’s a signal that it’s time to stretch. Tara shares how she created her own leadership role and encourages others to initiate conversations with their executives about growth. So tune in, listen now and get ready to evolve! Some of Tara’s Memorable Quotes “Career transformation is not linear. It’s consistent action and intentionality that moves you forward.” “We support the decision-makers. That’s power. We need to tap into that.” “We’re not just supporting, we’re leading. In today’s episode, we’re having a healthy debate with Jeremy Burrows Author of The Leader Assistant: Four Pillars of a Confident, Game-Changing Assistant , and founder and host of The Leader Assistant Podcast which Jessica and Candice have both been guests on. We start with the debate of the Title “Assistant” referring back to Candice’s viral LinkedIn post that sparked this debate (link below). Jeremy has a different opinion to Candice and also brings feedback from some of the admins in his community about how they feel on this topic. Jessica gives feedback from her admin community and shares her experience with titles and gives an example of how a title change caused a huge financial impact in her family. We discuss how all 3 of us have held the same title of “Executive Assistant”, but had VERY different careers, opportunities and salaries. We discuss the privilledges that some of us have had, and acknowledge that others in our communities don’t have these privileges, including the gender pay-gap. We discuss the varying costs of training, development and events in admin from different sides of the globe. What some see as expensive and what some see as investments and get their companies to pay for the investment. We discuss pay disparity and talking about your salary with other admins. We touch on the ugly side of some of the thought leaders in the admin space. We discuss the lack of diversity in this space and the need for more younger people to start showing up in this space, without the fear of being torn-down for their efforts. (This was recorded just after episode 2 with Dominique Givens. We interviewed Dominique about her experience as a younger african-american female who was on the receiving end of a known bully in the admin community for giving her opinion and making her way as a thought leader on LinkedIn in the admin space).…

On Episode 2, we introduce Dominique Givens as our first ever guest. Dominique is a Chief of Staff & Executive Administrative Partner in the Technology sector. So a bit more about our first guest - she is the result of a pre-med and computer science double major having an existential crisis and dropped out of undergrad to join the workforce. Why? She goes on to become the ultimate corporate linchpin, of course! Meet Dominique Givens, former Chief of Staff at The Adecco Group and current Executive Administrative Partner to the EVP of Aircraft Engineering at Shield AI. Dominique has spent over 6+ years honing her skills in what she has aptly coined "C.O.A.M." (Communications, Operations, and Administrative Management)—a framework she has even trademarked! Partnering with C-level executives in the technology industry, Dominique has held tenure at tech giants like Meta and Pinterest. Now, she is leveraging her experience and skill set to help reverse engineer that success in the startup world. In 2023, Dominique found herself the target of a prominent figure within the admin community after sharing an innocent LinkedIn post that gained some attention. Unfortunately, this led to a wave of online bullying from a fellow admin professional who should have known better. This experience prompted us to bring this important conversation to the podcast, highlighting the critical issue of online bullying in professional spaces. In this episode, we dive into the emotional, psychological, and career-related impacts of online bullying, particularly focusing on its disproportionate effects on marginalized communities. Dominique courageously shares her personal experience, opening up about the emotional toll and the challenges she faced both personally and professionally. We explore how she managed the situation, the actions she took, and the invaluable support she received from the admin community. Tune in as we discuss the importance of recognizing and addressing online bullying, and how we can create a more supportive and inclusive environment for everyone in the professional world. Happy Birthday Jessica! For us, this was episode 5, but for our community and listeners, it was the day they found out about our secret podcast project! We’re so thrilled you have been enjoying it. We truly appreciate the 5 star ratings, follows and feedback. What an incredible and supportive community we have – so thank you! Today’s episode, we talk about 'Balancing Work and Personal Life as an Admin'. We feel like this is always so hard in our profession as we’re often the “go to” person for information and access. Health is wealth. Without your health, you can’t function, so make sure you prioritise your wellbeing (both physical and mental health) so you can be the best version of yourself. Today’s episode is on Admin Titles and doesn’t this topic stir peoples opinions up. Just remember, everyone is entitled to their opinion and their own experiences of how they feel with what their title has been, is and could be in the future. We set up a poll on LinkedIn recently with the topic “Do you believe it’s time we drop the title “Assistant” and move across to the title of something like “Executive Business Partner”? 81% of 200 voted Yes and 19% no. Interesting isn’t it? Has a change in admin title helped you go up in salary? How do you feel about having “Assistant” in your title? Do you feel people don’t recognise you as the professional you are because your title says Assistant? How do you feel about being asked to get coffee or pick up dry-cleaning etc.? Do you feel that sits in the remit of a role of an Assistant? This is the article that got people in a heated debate over admin titles: https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2023-03-03/assistants-remote-work-new-job-titles-expanded-roles It was Maggie Olsen who I was trying to remember who the Chief of Staff trainer is: https://www.novachiefofstaff.com/ Did you know there are over 160 admin titles according to the The World Administrators Alliance (WAA) Global Skills Matrix? “How do you put the genie back in the bottle”. Jessica makes the point that we have proven that most admin jobs CAN be done working from home becasue of the pandemic. In this episode, Jessica discusses how moving to remote work led her to being diagnosed with ADHD and how this was a relief. Are you someone who thrives working from home or do you function better in the workplace? Candice discovered she needs a bit of both. Jessica would be happy never to go back to a typical office as Jessica thrives working comfortably at home, whereas Candice needs social interaction. They both agreed they were more productive working from home though. If you work remotely, how do you stay engaged and feel like you’re connected with colleagues? Jessica and Candice chat about making it work for you so you’re able to make your work life – your best life! If you’re looking to move to a job that has remote or hybrid work, make sure it’s in writing and clear (especially if you’re an EA) on how much flexibility you have in working Hybrid e.g. do you need to be in the office when your Executive is in the office. Be clear on what you’re signing up for and if you have specifics like you need to leave by 3.00pm, get that in writing so there’s never an issue when you need to either work from home or leave “early” as management changes, but signed contracts do not.
