The US has spent decades trying to crush Cuba, but why does this small island nation still stand? In this episode, we dive into The Declarations of Havana , exploring Fidel Castro’s most radical ideas, how his speeches shaped the Cuban Revolution, and why the empire still fears them. From anti-imperialism to mass mobilization, we break down how Castro framed Cuba’s struggle for independence and what made his vision so dangerous to US interests. In this episode, I talked to Siobhan O'Connor, who has lived through it all—growing up in a hardcore evangelical environment, serving in the military, coming out as trans later in life, and watching the world turn more hostile toward people like her. We get into her story, the right’s relentless attacks on trans people, and how even so-called allies keep failing the community. She shares what it’s like to keep moving forward, even when the odds are stacked against you. Capitalism is dead… but it just won’t stay buried. This episode, we’re diving into Mark Fisher’s Capitalist Realism —one of the most influential leftist texts of the last 20 years. Why does it feel like nothing ever changes, even when everything is constantly in crisis? How does capitalism keep itself alive, even as it rots? And most importantly, how do we break out of this nightmare? Let’s get into it. This week, we’re wrapping up our trilogy on Anton Pannekoek with a deep dive into his classic work, Workers’ Councils . What’s the real alternative to capitalism and state socialism? Pannekoek argued it’s workers themselves taking control—no bosses, no bureaucracy, just collective power. We unpack his critiques of unions, the state, and nationalism, and explore his vision for a society run by workers' councils. From strikes to direct action, we look at how this theoretical framework can inspire real-world change. Don’t miss this one as we explore what it really means to build a world run by workers. In this episode Justin and I dive into Adolph Reed’s Class Notes to tackle the failures of performative politics and the rise of identity-driven activism. We break down Reed’s critique of neoliberalism, symbolic gestures, and the commodification of struggle while making the case for class-based organizing as the only path to real solidarity and change. It’s a deep and fiery conversation about how the left can get back on track by focusing on material issues and collective action. In this episode of The Skeptical Leftist , I talk with Damien Marie at Hope about axiology—the philosophy of value and worth—and its relevance to how we make ethical decisions. We break down the concepts of intrinsic and extrinsic value, look at how capitalism distorts our understanding of human worth, and explore how axiology can clarify morality in practical ways. The conversation also touches on justice versus care ethics, the nuances of the free will debate, and why understanding value is key to navigating ethical challenges in a complex world. In this episode of Red Reviews, we dive into Erich Fromm’s The Revolution of Hope and explore how hope—not blind optimism—can be a radical tool for social change. We tackle the dangers of a mechanized society, critique the unchecked power of big tech, and discuss what a truly democratic, humanistic use of technology could look like. Along the way, we dig into the environmental costs of generative AI, the allure of doomerism, and why Fromm’s ideas about radical hope are more relevant than ever. We talk about Boeing, the 2008 financial crash, and how neoliberalism has turned our entire economy into a rigged game for the rich. But it’s not all doom and gloom—we also dig into ideas for fighting back, from participatory economics to universal basic services and organizing for real worker power. If you’re tired of the status quo and want to hear how we can build a better world, this one’s for you. In this episode, I sat down with Steve Shives to talk about how we both went from New Atheism’s golden age to something a little more… let’s say, nuanced. We talk about why the New Atheist movement felt like home at first and why it didn’t go deep enough when it came to actual social change. Steve doesn’t hold back on what he thinks about some of the big names in the atheist world and how his focus has shifted over time—from taking down religious beliefs to taking on bigger social issues. We also discuss what it was like navigating all the divides within the skeptic and atheist communities, why breaking away from that world opened up new perspectives for us, and how we both ended up in the realm of leftist politics and social justice. Whether you’ve followed the atheist movement for years or just want to hear about evolving perspectives, there’s a lot for you here. This week, Justin and I are talking about gender and the manufactured panic surrounding it. We’re digging into the fear tactics, misinformation, and the fake ‘gender debate’ that keeps us from addressing real issues—like the rights and dignity of trans and non-binary people, access to gender-affirming healthcare, and the fight against discrimination. With insights from Judith Butler’s Who's Afraid of Gender , we’re breaking down the lies and exposing the real stakes they don’t want us to see. In this episode of Red Reviews , Justin and I tackle one of the biggest questions for leftists: where do Marxism and Anarchism actually meet? Inspired by Daniel Guérin’s For a Libertarian Communism , we explore how these two ideologies—often seen as opposing forces—come together in their shared goal of dismantling state control and capitalist exploitation. Guérin’s work is a powerful roadmap for those of us who want a world where people have real freedom and power over their own lives. We’re digging into what libertarian communism actually looks like in practice and why this synthesis matters for anyone dreaming of a world built on solidarity, mutual aid, and true liberation. If you’re curious about where radical thought can take us, this one’s for you. In this episode, I chat with psychoanalysts Avgi Saketopoulou and Ann Pellegrini about their new book, Gender Without Identity . We dig into how gender isn’t some fixed core identity but something shaped by cultural interactions, and yeah, sometimes trauma. Avgi and Ann take apart the mainstream ideas of gender, questioning the whole "core identity" thing, and instead offer a way more nuanced take that dives into the messy complexities of gender in psychoanalysis. We also take a hard look at the bullshit legislative attacks on trans people and how transness gets framed as a problem by those in power. This is a deep dive into gender theory and trauma that anyone interested in real, meaningful inclusivity needs to hear. You can follow Ann and Avgi on their websites Ann Pellegrini’s Website https://annpellegrini.com Avgi Saketopoulou’s Website https://avgisaketopoulou.com Unconscious in Translation : https://www.uitbooks.com/shop/gender-without-identity Little District Books : https://www.littledistrictbooks.com/products/gender-without-identity My thoughts on the book This book challenges the idea that gender is fixed or inherent, instead showing how it’s shaped by trauma and cultural experiences. It’s dense and complex, but it dives into important questions we need to be asking about how gender forms. Saketopoulou and Pellegrini do an excellent job of pushing beyond conventional thinking. It’s not a light read, but for those who care about really understanding the intersection of gender and trauma, it’s well worth the effort. The psychoanalytic approach might sometimes feel heavy, but the depth they go into pays off. If you’re looking for a book that challenges the mainstream understanding of gender identity and forces you to confront the uncomfortable realities of how we construct gender, Gender Without Identity is one to pick up. It’s thought-provoking and timely for anyone who’s serious about moving these conversations forward. In this stream, we gather a diverse group of progressives to discuss the U.S. election—an event we all wish was over but can't ignore. Our panel, including Foxy Jazzabelle, my usual cohost Justin Clark, Steve Shives, Chrisi from Chrisiousity, and SomeRandomG33k (who organized the stream), dive into the messy reality of the election and its consequences. With varied perspectives but a shared worry about the future, we explore what might happen if Harris loses and what another Trump term could mean. Even though we're exhausted by election talk, this one could be consequential. Join us for a candid, sometimes frustrated, but always insightful conversation about what's at stake. Hey everyone, welcome back to the show. Today, we’re revisiting some older bonus content, originally from August of 2021, part of our Red Reviews series—this one’s Red Reviews #6. Even though it’s been a while since we recorded it, the issues we discuss are still very much relevant today. We’ll be diving into how some on the left can lose their way when they start shifting to the right, forgetting their responsibility to stand up for regular people—those of us who work hard every day—not the ones sitting comfortably in power. So, let’s get into today’s episode. We’re going to explore why it’s so important to stay true to our principles, especially when things get tough. I hope you find this conversation as meaningful as I do, and as always, thanks for tuning in." *CW - discussion of sexual harassment and assault* In this episode I talked to Eiynah Nicemangos, host of the podcast Polite Conversations. Eiynah has been podcasting for a long time and does high quality work around the far right and the so-called intellectual dark web. Her series debunking and calling out Sam Harris for his bigotry is some of my favorite content covering Sam and the people like him. In this chat we talk about some stuff that happened adjacent to my old online community, the atheist community. There are some reactions to being called out that were truly shitty and there were some allegations of supposed progressive guys that came out a little while ago that exposed some hypocrisy among the men who claimed to be progressive. In some ways this may appear to be a drama episode but that isn’t the intent. People with privilege have to be more aware of and more thoughtful about the ways they behave even when the consequences could be potentially harmful to them. In this interview episode I talked to Nora Loreto, Nora is a well known podcaster, writer, and journalist who has done amazing work covering politics from a left perspective. She did work on Covid that was truly instrumental to understanding the impact of the pandemic on Canadian long term care homes. She often doesn't get the credit she deserves but her books and her writing have been a huge help for people like me to get a good analysis of what's happening in Canadian politics. I'm a big fan and I really enjoyed this chat. There is no intro rant because I was trying to get things done despite being sick and busy when I needed to be resting. Thanks for understanding. Hi and welcome to the next installment of Red Reviews. In this one Justin and I talked about Erich Fromm’s book, Marx’s Concept of Man which is a book that discusses the humanism of Marx and how the philosophy of socialism has been co-opted by anti-humanist tendencies as well as exploring the humanism of Marx. Erich Fromm was a psychologist, a psychoanalyst in the Freudian tradition, while also reinterpreting Freud and psychoanalysis to be more humanistic and less orthodox. He had an interest in the cross section of psychoanalysis and Freud and Marxism. He was exposed to Marxism at a young age (possibly teens) and like many thinkers in the Marxist Humanist tradition he was particularly attracted to the early writing of Marx. Marx’s Concept of Man was written in 1961 and is split in two sections. In the first half of the book is Fromm’s essay on Marx’s concept of man and the second half is Marx’s own writings, namely, Marx’s Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844. In this interview I talked to Ali Horriyat, founder of Compassiviste. Ali left the lucrative, profit-driven world of finance in 2016 to devote himself to his vision of a society where compassion, empathy, and social impact are at the heart of our actions. In 2020, he launched Compassiviste to spread this vision. Born in Dubai, he attended schools in the UAE, France and Switzerland before pursuing his higher education in Canada. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in economics, political science, philosophy, business, international relations and conflict resolution, and religion. Ali is the author of 12 books, including collections of essays and poetry, with themes ranging from racism and capitalism to spirituality, love and compassion. He believes that humans must “love always, and always love.” We talk a lot about the organization he founded, Compassiviste, and all the things surrounding it from sustainability to hypocrisy to compassion and how his view of things doesn’t differ so much from the views of anarchists, or at least this anarchist. Hey folks, welcome to another episode of The Mind of a Skeptical Lefist. This time around I talked to Chris Scully of the podcast Ironweeds and the band Zombie Giuliani. We covered a lot of ground in this chat but for length I did have to cut a little bit because we went so long. We talked about his podcast and co-hosts a little bit, anarchism, social ecology, the environmental crisis that we’re facing, and so much more. Ironweeds is a podcast where the hosts discuss current events and news items and analyze them using a leftist framework. While the format is fairly common, the hosts of Ironweeds are not. They are clever, funny, knowledgeable people with an obvious care for the well being of others. I highly recommend you check it out. And if you like punk then check out Chris’ band Zombie Giuliani, I can’t say that I’m a big punk fan but I do enjoy listening to Chris’ band. In this episode I talked to Damien Marie Athope. Damien is an activist turned educator who has spent many years working for social justice in various ways. He has spent the past few years learning about and spreading information about the history of religion from the time before it became the dominant mode of thought across much of the world. He has studied prehistory and talked to many archeologists and anthropologists who appreciated his work and his understanding of prehistoric times. In this interview we talk about his growth and how he came to the worldview he now holds including his path to atheism and anarchism while touching on his mode of thinking which he describes as axiology. For more information on axiology you can go watch Damien’s videos on his channel which will be in the show notes or description box of this episode. We didn’t spend as much time on Damien’s activism and what he has done for his communities so we’re going to be doing a second interview. I hope that you appreciate him and his work as much as I do. This interview is a bit different from some of the others I’ve done. We do touch on politics a bit but it’s really a personal look at what someone who suffers from a chronic condition is dealing with. My friend Matty is the host of the podcast Nooks and Crannies and if you’ve been listening for a long time then you might remember him from early on with the episode titled Canadian Lefties Chatting or something like that. It actually isn’t even up on youtube because my internet was so bad that the video was awful. Matty is a brilliant guy who studied anthropology and has also suffered over 40 concussions. This discussion is about that and how the system, even our Canadian system, is failing him.
