The Book of Romans, Part 75: Loving Jacob, Hating Esau II (Rom. 9:9-13)

But when Paul makes the statement in Romans 9:13 that “Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated,” he was under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. In the first half of this sermon, we began to learn that the word “hate” truly means “hate,” and that this concept of divine hatred is a Bible principle. As we continue examining this concept today, we learn that God’s hatred of the wicked is a perfect moral hatred, not an arbitrary emotional response, and that it perfectly reflects His holy character. We will see that the fact that God loved Jacob and hated Esau is the foundation for an understanding of God’s grace that is bestowed upon His children in election.
