En el espacio aéreo sin nubes que se extiende entre los campos de maíz de Illinois, un hombre deposita su fe en la hélice de su biplano. Para ese piloto, la fe es tan real como un depósito lleno de gasolina y las chispas que saltan de los cilindros, hasta que se encuentra con Donald Shimoda, un antiguo mecánico que se define como un mesías y es capaz de lograr que las penas desaparezcan y que la imaginación remonte el vuelo.
