This chapter focused on king Ahab in the Northern Tribe of Israel. He wanted a beautiful vineyard that was close to his palace, but it belonged to Naboth the Jezreelite. Ahab offered to buy it, or replace it with another vineyard, but Naboth refused because it was his inheritance from his father. Ahab sulked, laid in his bed, and refused to eat. His wife, Jezebel, came home and asked what was the matter? When she found out she said, "Is this how you act as King of Israel? Get up and eat! Cheer up. I'll get you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite." She wrote letters in the name of the king. Had them sealed with the King's and sent them to the leaders in Naboth's village. They made a mock trial and stoned Naboth to death. Queen Jezebel told the king that Naboth was dead, so he could go and take the vineyard. King Ahab went to the vineyard, but the Lord sent Elijah the prophet there too. The Lord told him that Ahab and his family would die, and that Jezebel would be eaten by dogs by the wall of Jezreel. At this news, Ahab humbled himself before the Lord and tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, and fasted. When the Lord saw this, he told Ahab that since Ahab humbled himself, the Lord would not allow this to happen until the days of his son.
