The US film producer Janet Yang is the new president of the Oscar Academy. The board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chose the 66-year-old to succeed the previous President David Rubin, as the organization announced on Tuesday.
The producer is known for films like 1993's Daughters of Heaven and 1996's Larry Flynt: The Ugly Truth. She becomes the fourth woman to head the Oscars academy and the first woman of Asian descent. Oscar Academy executive director Bill Kramer on Tuesday recognized Yang's past work for the organization, including in areas such as "fairness, diversity and inclusion."
The academy, which awards the most coveted film prize in the world, has had to contend with a number of controversies in recent years. She was criticized, among other things, for the allegation of a lack of diversity. Under the slogan "#OscarsSoWhite" (Oscars so white) launched in 2015, there were calls for a boycott of the Oscars and storms of protest in the online networks due to the insufficient consideration given to non-white filmmakers.
The academy has since fulfilled its promise to double the number of its members who are women and minorities by 2020. The number of members rose from around 6,000 to around 10,000.
