For One Piece Film: Red, Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the manga template, insisted on a specific change. Assistant Chief Director and Concert Scene Director Aya Komaki told us what that was.
In One Piece Film: Red, Luffy and his friends embark on a new adventure on the big screen. With Uta we also get to know an important new character this time, who has a special connection to the captain of the straw hat gang. By the way, the team had to change one detail of their first meeting in the anime movie at the request of series creator Eiichiro Oda. Aya Komaki told us exactly what that was in an interview.
Luffy wouldn't do that, not even in One Piece Film: Red
Komaki-san worked on the theatrical film as Assistant Chief Director and Concert Scene Director and chatted with us briefly during the German premiere of One Piece Film: Red. Among other things, she told us that Oda, who was involved in the film, was very obsessed with detail. "He has a strong vision and doesn't want to deviate from it." The team has therefore always strived to meet these requirements.
As she told us, there were a lot of retakes because of that. One scene that had to be altered was the greeting between Luffy and Uta. Both have known each other since childhood and meet in the film for the first time in many years. Originally it was planned that our protagonist “should adopt certain arm movements and poses. However, Oda intervened and said, "No, Luffy's not that character - we need to take that out."
Specifically, according to Komaki-san, the team had to make this change because Luffy isn't someone who has "fixed movements or greetings. He doesn't like fixed things because he's such a free spirit. He's a free-living character and something predetermined, fixed, that's not him.” So, like in the manga template, Oda paid attention to every little detail in the franchise's latest anime feature film.
In Japan, "One Piece Film: Red" was able to hold its place at the top of the box office for eleven weeks. To date, the anime blockbuster has attracted 12.5 million people to the cinema, which corresponds to box office earnings of 17.36 billion yen (approx. 117.6 million euros). This makes the anime hit the most successful movie of the year in Japan to date. The film is also ranked 6th among the highest-grossing anime films of all time in Japan (via ANN).
