Wolfgang Petersen is dead. The director was one of the most successful German Hollywood exports and died at the age of 81 from pancreatic cancer in Los Angeles, where he had lived since 1986.
The Chancellor offers his condolences
The list of blockbusters in which the filmmaker was behind the camera is long: 'The Neverending Story', 'Air Force One', 'The Boat', 'Outbreak - Silent Killers', 'In The Line Of Fire - The Second Chance', 'The Tempest', 'Troy'… just to name a few. 'The Boat' earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Director. Jürgen Prochnow (81), who plays the captain of the submarine in the cult film, was one of the first to pay tribute to his former companion. "He was like a brother to me," said the actor. It was Wolfgang Petersen who gave him his first major roles. The Chancellor also said goodbye, writing on Twitter: "The never-ending story of Wolfgang #Petersen has come to an end. The boat and many of his other films live on – far beyond Germany. The special merit of a special narrator."
Hollywood bows to Wolfgang Petersen
In Hollywood, too, people mourn the loss of Wolfgang Petersen. Director Joe Russo (51, 'Avengers: Endgame') shared a clip of the most famous scene from the movie 'The Neverending Story'. In it, Artax, the hero Atreyu's horse, sinks into the swamp of sadness. "R.I.P. for a cinema legend that traumatized an entire generation. May the story of Wolfgang Petersen's direction be endless." Glenn Close, who appeared in front of the camera for the cult director in 'Air Force One', released a statement: "Playing for Wolfgang Petersen is a very special memory. Although the script was exciting and incredibly intense, I remember laughing a lot ." She knew "a man full of joie de vivre who did what he loved most." Matthias Schweighöfer wrote on Instagram: "Dear Wolfgang, thanks for everything, thanks for Hollywood, thanks for your humanity, thanks for your pathos, we will miss you, have a safe trip, rest in peace." Bully Herbig shared a black and white photo of himself with the filmmaker and simply wrote: "Unforgettable."
Last year, the deceased said in an ARD interview: "The bottom line is that as long as my wife and I are healthy, I'm very satisfied. We have a beautiful house, a beautiful life." R.I.P. Wolfgang Petersen.
