Los Angeles (AP) - According to Hollywood star Ethan Hawke, the decision-makers in the Marvel universe are "extremely actor-friendly", but possibly not "director-friendly".
That could be what the star directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola meant with their criticism of Marvel works, said the 51-year-old in an interview with the industry portal Indiewire published on Tuesday. Years ago, Scorsese compared superhero films to amusement parks - but for him that was not cinema. Coppola then followed up and described the strips as "despicable".
Hawke starred alongside leading actor Oscar Isaac in "Moon Knight" earlier this year. At the center of the new six-part Marvel series, which premiered on the Disney+ streaming service at the end of March, is a main character with a dissociative identity disorder. Hawke plays some kind of cult leader in it. «For me, the best thing about "Moon Knight" was the Oscar performance. It's a crazy act that happens to have a huge budget - quite an outlandish performance," Hawke said.
The actor, also known as a screenwriter and director, drew attention to himself as a teenager in "Dead Poets Society". He later enjoyed worldwide success with the science fiction film «Gattaca» (1997) and the drama «Boyhood» (2014).
When asked if he wanted to continue playing "Moon Knight", Hawke said: "I'm not allowed to talk about it." He had to sign a confidentiality agreement, but he was "not interested in long-term commitments".
It was about protecting himself because he didn't know what would become of the project. "I just wanted to know what it looks like in this sandpit," said the 51-year-old. "And that's what young people are looking at. So why should we sit and tell them it's not good?"
