STORY 1: Gwinnett Suing State and Legislators To Stop City Of Mulberry's Formation
The new city of Mulberry is embroiled in a legal battle with Gwinnett County over its right to exist. Despite voters approving Mulberry's creation in May, the county is suing to halt its establishment, claiming the referendum misled voters by promising no city property taxes. The county argues this violates the Georgia Constitution, as cities must have the power to levy taxes. The lawsuit also challenges provisions in Mulberry's charter regarding service provision and zoning. Despite previous failed attempts to stop Mulberry, county officials continue their legal fight, while Mulberry's supporters defend the city's charter and its legality.
STORY 2: New course in GGC's School of Education highlights social emotional learning
At Georgia Gwinnett College, the School of Education has introduced a new course on social emotional learning (SEL) to enhance future teachers' impact in the classroom. This one-credit course covers SEL competencies like self-awareness, self-management, and responsible decision-making, equipping teachers with skills to help students communicate and manage emotions effectively. Dr. Kinga Varga-Dobai highlights the course's role in preparing teachers for diverse learning environments and preventing bullying. Students like Stephanie Waddell and Chasiti Wade find the course beneficial for managing stress and understanding student needs, fostering a supportive classroom environment.
STORY 3: Georgia Tech Rewards Archer Grad Chad Alexander with Scholarship
Georgia Tech's football coaches awarded a scholarship to Chad Alexander, a sophomore running back and Archer High School graduate, during practice on Tuesday. As a true freshman walk-on last season, Alexander played in nine games, primarily on special teams, making three tackles and recovering a fumble. This season, he's contributed as a running back with 26 carries for 141 yards, including notable performances against Florida State and Duke. Originally committed to Army, Alexander switched to Georgia Tech, where he's now making a significant impact.
