The Lost Art of Gratitude Week 3: The Cure for Comparison
Comparison is the thief of joy. – C.S. Lewis Mimetic Desire: The idea that imitation is the force that shapes human desire. People desire things because someone else—a model—did first.
Key Point: It’s our similarity that causes division, jealousy, and envy -- not our differences. What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. – James 4:1-2
What we all want: security, connection, and control. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.” – Exodus 20:17
Scapegoat: The person/group a society decides to blame for not being able to get what they want.
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. - Ephesians 5:1
