Por primera vez en su historia, el pueblo afroamericano se veía representado en la gran pantalla; tenía y adoraba a sus propios héroes; mostraba a ojos de todos cómo era ser negro en Estados Unidos en aquellos años. Se popularizaron sus problemas, sus dilemas, sus costumbres, su jerga... y, cómo no, su música.
