You are now listening to Ritmos Negros! In this episode, I speak with Shari Williams, a Jamaican musicologist, about Ska and Mento music. Mento is a style of Jamaican folk music that reached its peak in the 40s/50s. Then, Ska emerged from Mento and combined American Jazz and rhythm and blues. Both Ska and Mento have greatly influenced Reggae music, and these styles have been influenced by both the U.S. and Cuba in many ways.
